Recommend me a sax.....please.
Discussion
As an absolute beginner (but one who has dabbled with the trumpet years back), I'm looking for a quality horn. Anyone here dealt with these people ?

I'm tempted by some of the deals on that site but finding it hard to reach a decision.
I prefer the sound and scale of the tenor, too. Or should I choose an alto ?
All help appreciated, cheers![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

Another long-lapsed player here - start with an alto. If you can play a recorder you'll find the positioning very similar (the same) for quite a few notes!
As for which brand, Jupiter and Yamaha seem to get a good rep for decent price/quality for beginners. You can then set about it with a brillo pad to get that aged 'jazz cat' effect!

Hi mark - I've got an Earlham Pro Tenor that I'd been considering parting with. Would prefer it went to a PHer! Just sat on a stand looking unloved at the mo.http://www.sax.co.uk/index2.html

PM me if you want to know more.
Can't believe I missed this! I'm a (part time) pro gigging sax player, (full time) woodwind teacher. Don't worry about starting with the alto - if it's the tenor you like the sound of, start with tenor.
I did, aged 11, I struggled to lift it, and it came down to my knees! Didn't stop me playing it though! The hand positions are the same (finger stretch-wise) as the alto, the hands are just further apart.
The tenor is an "easier" blow than the alto too - it requires less embouchure pressure than the alto, so it's easier for a beginner to blow reasonably in tune.
Sax.co.uk are great, I buy all my kit from them, mail order is prompt, but going to the warehouse is an experience!
Stig's offer of an Earlham tenor is a good one. They make decent quality, in tune, beginner-to-intermediate level saxophones. For that budget range, anything Jupiter/Earlham/Trevor James should be fine.

Not a horn player myself, but the missus is and swears by Yangisawa if that helps...
Yanagisawa are great (I play their entry level Tenor - which is fine, and has a big tone), but they are above an entry level budget if buying new. My tenor cost £1250 new, and that was their cheapest. You can pay well over £3000 for one of their top of the range saxes!Stig said:
