V8/V6/S6/etc Engined 4x4
Discussion
I see lots of others have suggested a WJ so I'll just add a +1
I run a 1998 4.7 Ltd in the UK and a 2004 4.7 HO Overland in Dubai so am clearly biaised, but they are great trucks, very capable offroad and (compared to the Range Rovers I ran before) reliable.
As noted above, they do have their foibles though, blend doors is the most well known one, but engine mounts break fairly often and the cooling system needs to be kept in good condition.
There are a number of decent forums around and some very good parts prices from independants.

Well the chap I was meant to call over to this weekend to take his Jeep from didn't work out.. Three times I asked him for his number and gave him mine to speed up the process but he would only communicate via eBay messages. Obviously only checks them every two days as well which is a waste of time. Feck him, his loss.
So there's one closer to me, higher miles (130k) but FSH and recent LPG service too. Noise from the rear diff on full lock (LSD in these, so hoping it just needs an oil change or at worst a bearing which a day underneath some axle stands should sort..) but other than that looks mechanically sound. A lot cheaper too so hopefully it should all balance out, will see tonight!

Had my 2004 Overland 2.7 crd WJ a year now and put 8K on it.
Just did the blend door repair the other week (£90 kit from e-bay)
Apart from the usual servicing and consumerables its been faultless.
Will upgrade to the Addco rear sway bar soon just to tidy up the ride quality.
I think they are great VFM if you get a decent example.

Well I bought the one I went to see tonight..
2003 4.7 V8 HO Overland
130k miles
FSH & Full LPG Service History (fitted at 600 miles)
Lots of work done recently.
Folder full of receipts right from 2003.
All the mod cons; Sat Nav, Parking Sensors, Heated Leather.. amazingly well kitted out for the money! Parrot handsfree also fitted.
Owned by a Doctor until 125k miles, 2nd owner bought it in April but just had kids and changed job (more travelling, less money).
Needs the blend doors done, which I'll do myself (any links to European sellers much appreciated).
The rear diff seems to be very aggressive and hops when on full lock, hopefully a fluid change will sort this..
Also has a radar jammer fitted but I'm not sure if it's working or not..
Thanks for the advice gents, hopefully some trouble free winter V8 hacking ahead!

sounds like the fluid has been changed without adding any friction modifier for the limited slip diff. You can get it from your local jeep dealer... I've a couple bottles of the stuff they gave me for free after the last service.

Ah fantastic thanks! Best to drain the lot and add together with new fluid? You can get it from your local jeep dealer... I've a couple bottles of the stuff they gave me for free after the last service.
Yup... drain and refill
I used some nice Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 in the rear, and Castrol Universal 75w-90 semi-synthetic gear oil in the front
The Syntrax already has some additive in it, but I found it needed some more before the wheel hopping stopped.
Don't put too much in though as you will lose 4x4 since the LSD will slip too much.

Can you remember how much you added in the end? This was way below budget so I'm happy to spend the extra to get it sitting as it should. I've also been looking at some thicker rear anti-sway bars, reviews seem to be excellent.I used some nice Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 in the rear, and Castrol Universal 75w-90 semi-synthetic gear oil in the front

2.5 oz (74ml) in the front and 4 oz (118ml) in the rear is what jeep recommends, however it's not an exact science and there is a bit of trial and error involved I found.
I think I put a bit less in the rear since the Castrol Syntrax already had some slip additive in
It also helps quieten the diff down a bit.

You may want to think about fitting a set of these to the rear lower control arms......I think they are great VFM if you get a decent example.
poly bush
The difference these made to the ride quality and handling was astounding - and that's without poly bushing anything else.

This is a bit confusing. Last service I had my spanner man change the diff and tranfer box fluids using the correct Mopar spec oils. You can get it from your local jeep dealer... I've a couple bottles of the stuff they gave me for free after the last service.
Are you saying that this additive should have been used as well, or only if you experience a problem ?

You may want to think about chucking this part of the kit on when you get the chance, having spoken to Greg at 4play, he did mention that these alone will give the best improvement to the vehicle.I didn't even go up there to buy these just to pick up a batch of fluids and pads+discs, it's amazing how he can talk you into spending even more money

I want to search for this "4play" shop but I'm worried the Google search results may be.. inappropriate. Does he have a website?I didn't even go up there to buy these just to pick up a batch of fluids and pads+discs, it's amazing how he can talk you into spending even more money
