The Bath festival is one of the very few which insist on safety gear. The blue book doesn’t make anything mandatory for road rallies or Targa, a standard car ( fitting with the car rules) and ordinary clothing is fine.

The closest I can think of for a description of a Targa is the ‘sticky’ about rules on the Targa Rally Facebook group. You would certainly find what you need there.

Bear in mind Targa events can vary from a glorified single venue Autotest, to what almost amounts to a mini stage rally. All run under the same permit.
Thanks for that. My initial search matched your comments, quite a range of events. Will need to get along to one.

Where are you in the country, I feel most road rallies, targa included have a different feel to them in different areas.

Has anyone got an idiots guide to targa road rallying? What car / preparations would you need, and what are the typical stages through the day?

Had a look at the Bath festival regs and the safety gear looks more onerous than road going speed regs.
As mentioned above, Targa Rallies vary area to area and club to club. We wrote this article to try to explain some things - the Mull Targa / Classic Rally is similar to a couple others in Scotland (Saltire Classic and Berwick Classic) in that we also need to attract Historic cars to make the event viable.

Live down in Somerset, about three miles from where the Bustard Rally is held. Local events seem to require some safety mods. Although that might not be such an issue for me.

Well the little AX finished the festival. A small issue of not putting the bonnet pins back in after scruitineering banghead and the starter motor failing didn't slow us down, ended up 2nd in class and 27th overall.

Dissapointed to find out today we lost 1st in class as we got penalised due to a Marshal filling in our timesheet wrong (filled in the test before, that we had to skip as it was blocked, easily done in dark)
We noted it on the timesheet, but we got back too late from loading the car to check provisional, but that's rallying, we'll get the luck next time.

Fantastic, well run event, the tests at castle coombe and the long test in the forest near longleat are some of the best I've done.

More of the forestry type targas require a half cage and 4 point harnesses, land owners demand it. Targas like the stu wood and Kemble don't require anything so ideal for giving it a go in your road car if you want to try.

You're in a good part of the country for it!

We had an excellent night on Guildford Motor Club’s Rapscallion 12 Car Rally last night. I was navigating in my own car with my friend Graham Brunton driving. GB was a top navigator in his day.

First time on Expert clues for 20+ years, managed to find almost all the code boards and got home within OTL, despite a puncture 1 mile from the end.

The roads were very rough and wet, despite being “coloured roads only”. The COC certainly used his local knowledge well to find an amazing and challenging route.

I suffered a bit of car sickened which meant I couldn’t plot on the move - any recommendations?

Cheers Duncan

First two events of the season done, poor results so far!.

An IDMC Scatter where I got the route totally wrong and wasted most of the time crawling around behind traffic on a A road.

Last night was the Ryemoor Trophy Rally, a cracking route right in the heart of territory I know well........ broke an engine mount on a white a third of the way through and had to retire and get the trailer to get it home!.

Oh well... Ross Traders next weekend in a Nissan Sunny... !
Well three events in and still nothing to show for it.
The Ross was shaping up to be a cracking event, some of the longest most intense tests I’ve ever done. Based on the Caerwent military base in South Wales. One of them was five miles long!.

Caerwents famous curbs must have bitten us as the rear off side wheel became deranged and blew two tyres in quick succession. Turns out it was pointing outwards at about 5 degrees and the tyre was catching the inner wing. Had to limp back To Ross on Wye with the wheel on backwards!.

Car was a Cherry not a Sunny.... all the same to me!.
For events three DNF!.
Ilkley 12 car last night, put the rear shocker through the top of the turret. Probably damaged on the Ryemoor. Got three days to fix it before the John Robson this Saturday night!.
Not been a good year so far
Bit of a catch up, the fix on the rear shocker on the Corsa went OK, and we made it to the start of the John Robson No problems.

Had a decent if fairly cautious night, no mistakes ( apart from a daft wrong slot in a neutral) on my side of the Car and a steady drive from the pilot. One random visit to a field when a sloppy 90 left caught us out. Ended up 17th overall, not really on the pace, but at least we finished.

Next up is the North Yorkshire Classic, I’d. Or ally be doing this in the Porsche but he’s doing the HERO challenge that day, so I’ve entered the Targa section with my brother in the Corsa. His first experience of a proper test and regularity event, so it will be interesting to see what he makes of it.

Nick - does the Kemble Targa require cars to have 1/2 cages and seat & harnesses?

cheers, Duncan

The Kemble Targa is not one you need a cage for, most of it is on tarmac/concrete with only a bit of rougher stuff.

We did it in our Swift a couple of years ago.

Bramley Targa tomorrow, should be good if rather slippery in a few places.

Hopefully the rain will stay away.

You need 'Avomine' motion sickness tablets. Nothing else ever worked for me.

Always a great event the Festival...
Happy to have got a 2nd in class on an event that starts about ten minutes from my house.

Great to see Ross supporting BMC as well, he's a future WRC star if ever there was one, a pal of mine did an event recently with him on the notes and said it was a different world from any other co-driver he's had (and over the last 16 years he's had a few!)

While you can't do 'real' events you can do table top rallies:

Link

Used to do these years ago at a motor club weekly meeting/beer drinking sessions!

I was useless!

But might have another go but I haven't got a roamer so will no doubt be even more useless!
