How about Short Circuit racing?

That used to be even cheaper than karting when I did it, but that was a very long time ago!
I started in Saloon stocks. Which was like a 'Banger Car' but the rules were non-contact, so you didn't have to take the car home in pieces. Usually the cars were MOT failures so were dirt cheap and then we would strip them out of everything but the essentials and then weld in a rolecage made from scaffolding! I'm sure the safety rules have changed a bit since then but still as cheap as you'll find. In the day my budget was naff-all, the only advantage I had was access to a trailer, so I could arrange to pick up MOT write offs, and get them to the circuits. Its not as dangerous as Banger racing, I had one car last two years!

Google "stock Car Racing" or similar, and get along to a local race.

And here is where the best advice is, which has already been given earlier in the thread....

Get involved with a team, help out. Do some spannering or just carrying and fetching large amounts of coffee for the stressed out pit crew. Use this time to learn as much as you can about the cars you have chosen.
