I know somebody who likes to tell everyone they spent that much as well, they went a bit mad with testing, full Eurocup and Superlight programme, all team run, I believe a jet came into it somewhere as well... But the implication is that is what you need to spend to be competitive, which is not true.

It's probably the same person(s)!!

As you say, you can run a car for as little as half a bag of bruised apples, and maybe two old telly's, if you do it yourself (and you're blessed with some engineering skills)

I know exactly what it costs to run a competitive Superlight, and it's not even close to half the figure you're talking about. Whether you could make *any* driver competitive for that is an entirely different question.

What, you mean no bruised apples, or no old tellys?

Seriously, I agree, you should be able to run one for far far less than £90K. Less than £30K should be more than enough providing you keep it out of the barriers!

Regarding the running costs of Caterhams, that's sadly the reason that I can't race mine any more and it's up for sale (no plug, honest!). The car itself is fantastic; it hardly ever wears out brakes and tyres and is wonderful to drive. The problem that I found is I was paying over £400 a year to register for the series and the organising club and £500+ per race to enter. Once you add the cost of towing to the circuit and bits and bobs you're spending close to £1,000 per race. And for that money it's just my Dad and I at the circuit doing everything ourselves (without half a clue what we're doing!! We spent the first two races with utterly comedy handling before I paid SimonY to sort it, which he did very well indeed), and that doesn't factor in the annual engine rebuilds that the quick guys seem to have. I'm a huge Caterham fan and it pains me to say this, but for that sort of money per race I can pay a team to run me in a faster car in something like 750MC F4 or Monoposto and just turn up and race without getting my hands dirty (race entry is under £200). Yes, the racing's not as close, but sadly I just can't afford to put together a competitive showing in Caterhams.

Try RGB, the racings close and a new engine/ gearbox depending on class A-C, could be 600 to 2000 quid. I run an R400 and the costs are around 300-600 quid depending on championship and travel costs. Used to race a fireblade fury but too far to travel from home to RGB otherwise i would probably be running a bike engine.

Road-going Bike-Engined Cars. Another 750MC Championship

http://www.750mc.co.uk/F-rgb.php

VERY competitive and has produced some fantastically entertaining racing in the past. Haven't seen any of their races this season yet but they have a 25-strong grid for two races at Donington this weekend so it's obviously still a popular formula.

Thanks. I'm off to Donny on Sunday (mainly to see the single seaters) so I'll see what I think.

I disagree with that bit. True, the F4 have not been well represented in recent years, but they're better this year, or try 750mc Formula Vee, I defy anyone to say we're not as close as the caterhams. And our grids often need a heat and a final because of over subscription.

Sorry, I was mainly referring there to the Monoposto. The Caterhams lap in one big swarm, whereas the Monopostos are quite spread out. I'm seeing my first F4 race on Sunday, so fingers crossed it'll be good. I've already cancelled my registration for this year's Caterham racing!
