Andy,

Oil will break down at the same temp in any engine I set my warning levels based on what my engine builder told me. I always figure that he's the best person to know what will and won't be good for one of his engines. Optimum oil temp around about 100-110, and water temp between 80 and 90. (how does this American guy get to be so accurate with his recomendations? To the nearest 1/100th of a degree? )

I always think that it's worth comparing notes with other engine types, just to get the borader view.

My little Rover lump may not put out as much power as you Chevy guys get, but it's got a torque curve a mile wide (over 300ft lb from 1,500 RPM up to just 5,700 RPM), and it'll throw my little old car towards the horizon at a respectable rate.

Was just trying to convert to your temperature in celsius. The man I quoted was a legendary nascar builder and advisor to GM. His advice was targeted towards nascar guys running 800hp+ and seeing revs at 9000rpm+. It is information they obtained on the dyno when trying to squeeze every last ounce of power from a motor. Then again, they can afford to trash a $65k engine and regularly bring 3 or 4 to a race. I don't let my water temp get over 220F and my oil temp over 265F even though I'm running synthetic. The only problem that I've had is that I've had to relocate my MSD box into the cockpit. Once I hit 215F on water my ignition died. It baffled the hell out of me, until I spoke with some other chevy guys. If you want terrific advice on the Chevy motor from knowledgable engine builders, then check out the performance messege board at www.chevytalk.com . There's a retired nascar engine builder in that group, and some very bright chevy guys who've built up hundreds of Chevy's. We Yanks are pretty familiar with this particular engine Most of us yanks also build our own engines, but source out our machine work.
