We have a not even 3 year old Samsung LED 65" smart telly and after briefly giving a distorted picture it now appears totally dead. Tried different power cables, sockets etc. No standby light or anything.

As it's out of warranty but not very old I contacted Samsung and they fobbed me off. Extremely pissed off as they caused no end of hassle to us earlier in the year with a broken brand new very expensive fridge.

Anyway, recommendations on what to do please... Should I try replacing maybe the power board etc? Something different? Or just junk it and claim on the insurance?!

thanks

Contact the retailer under the Consumer Rights Act of 2015, a TV should last more than 3 years without fault, the law says you have up to 6 years to raise a claim via the Small Claims Court should the item fail.

Or even better, a 6 year warranty.

^ this, I approached Samsung when my 3.5 year old tv needed a new screen which was beyond economical repair.

Samsung asked me to take it to the nearest authorised repair centre, get it in writing that it’s a write-off (that cost me £50) and then come back to them.

I did the above, got a 45% off voucher for another Samsung which I was happy with as it was a £2,500 tv.

thanks I've posted there now.

I mean it's reasonable to expect a reasonable level of warranty on any product.

I had yellow screen issues on my current LG OLED, it was out of warranty (just) and complaining to LG got me a replacement screen.

Samsung quality seems to be going down hill. We bought a large expensive TV which and from the off the blacks looked patchy. Within a couple of years those patches were permenant dark patches. My brother had different model but likewise expensive TV and the back-light LEDs became very prominent (like a diffuser had gone) after a couple of years. I've also had two blueray players give up with very little use.

It's a shame because I've long been a fan of Samsung products.

Well I had the option to take out a warranty extension, so technically Samsung didn’t have to offer me anything.

I'll bet it's the 2CV which has blown. Next time get a TV with a 3CV.

Be careful there - that’s not quite what the CRA says.

Sure, it should last more than three years, but that doesn’t have to be three years without repair. That term only holds good if the TV can’t be repaired.

Remember that a manufacturers warranty is in addition to your statutory rights, it does not replace them.

To quote from Which?
"One aspect of a product being of satisfactory quality is durability, in other words how long it lasts.

Durability takes into account many different factors like product type, brand reputation, price point and how it is advertised. For example you're unlikely to be able to claim a cheap kettle that's stopped working after four years isn't durable. Whereas a more premium and expensive kettle that's been well looked after and has stopped working after 14 months could be considered to not be durable, and therefore not of satisfactory quality"

pursued it with currys and they set me up with a team in samsung, and fortunately was able to get samsung to approve currys giving me a full refund.

Now I just need to navigate the issue of it being a 65" telly with no box!

Great result!

This is what Costco membership is for: pretty much lifetime warranty whilst you are a member.

Possibly sell for spares?

I finally caved in and bought a new TV as I realised that decent OLED sets were now in my price range. Arrives at the weekend, looking forward to seeing OLED on a big screen, I love it on my phone and tablet.

However, I'm currently using a Samsung UE40ES6800 which I got back in 2013 and is still going strong. I originally was going to keep it until it started giving problems - but it hasn't given any in the ten years that I've been running it for hours every day. Absolutely great set - I'll be boxing it up and keeping it as a spare. Sad, but not exactly surprising, to hear that the quality is going downhill on their modern sets.

condition of the refund is that it has to be returned
