Myself and the other half have just pruchased our first house. Money is obviously tight, but we still need a tv for the front room.
Im just wondering is big always best? Its by no means a large room, so Im just wondering if I should go for a 32" or 37" tv. Anyone got any thoughts?

can a tv be too large or a room

No, a TV can never be too large :-)

Lots of great deals on TV's all the time. 32's can be under 300 for a quality brand now, and 42" plasma's for 350 up. Even 50's are only around 450 or so now for Panasonic, LG, Samsung etc. I always recommend Panasonic plasma's, but it's up to you. The wife will probably decide for you on which is prettiest, not best :-)

Check out Richer Sounds, Sound & Vision, and have a look over on Hot UK Deals for best prices and advice on how to get the best prices. AV Forums has a bargains section too, and a massive thread on how to get John Lewis to price-match and still get their 5yr warranty.

right then guys, here are the dimensions of the room:

4.80m (15'9") by 3.35m (11'7")

what do you guys think is best, I t6hink a 37" will be more than big enough, maybe even getting away with a 32"

Go BIG if you want the TV to be the focal point of the room.

Our main TV is a 32" Panasonic LED set which I bought because I wanted built in Freesat. All HD pictures are great. Some SD programs on both HD and SD channels are OK but some SD programs on SD are awful. If the set was larger it would make the faults even worse.

Unless the larger set has better image correction and processing.

Pick up a Samsung LE40C530, less than £400, excellent TV for the money (I have one) and you won't be left wondering whether you should have bought bigger.

Planning ahead leaves only one choice, the 50.

If you get <42 then you will upgrade sooner than you think.

Panasonic is the generic answer here but check avforums and hdtvtest for reviews.

How far will you be sitting from it ?

We are about 12 ft away from a 50" & its great even on sd feeds (9ft would also be ok on sd feeds but better still on hd feeds)

If you're going for LED or LCD the closer you sit to a big screen the more grainy and poor quality the display will look - unless you're watching HD. And I mean actual HD programmes or BluRay not just owning an HDTV. I just bought a new Samsung and went for 37" but I'm sitting 2 metres away from it. Even standard def looks awesome. TBH I probably could've gone up to 40" but certainly any bigger and I would have noticed a difference.

We have a 32" in a similar size room (an the couch is on the far wall) It's fine for general TV but if you watch movies it does feel a little small.

For Xbox or similar I have to pull a couch in the middle of the room smile

I'd probably go 37" or 42" if it would fit the wall space.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I find it handy to keep near the TV for when I'm watching porn, or Holly Willoughby on This Morning.
