Impulse H2s????
Get thee some Audio Innovations amps to go with them (First Audio triode power amp would be my choice), lean back and enjoy in the knowledge that there'll be very little to touch it from today's hifi shops...
I'm going to try the H2s in the main system this weekend; instead of a pair Duntechs, to see how they get on. Need to find a strong helper first though.Get thee some Audio Innovations amps to go with them (First Audio triode power amp would be my choice), lean back and enjoy in the knowledge that there'll be very little to touch it from today's hifi shops...
I'm going to make a pair of Impulse H1/H2 type hybrids next year ( H1 bass section + H2 horn ) ; have got the SEAS drivers so far but not yet got round to sourcing the Focal tweeters.

Maybe you should have a look at the designers latest designs.

I think the HL1's or HLR's are more in tune with what you are after???
Have to say, having never spent fortunes on equipment like some (probably never spent more than a grand on an entire system) I have realised what I have been missing all these years.Even wiring up what are relatively mediocre Celestion speakers to the PC and playing FLAC files, has seriously opened my ears to all sorts of familiar tunes.I just can't believe how different everything sounds.Every string, every drum beat, every trumpet blast...
I can only imagine what some of the real high end stuff sounds like.I won't ever be able to listen to an MP3 again.

I have Impulse Lali's And I love them. Hopefully your "hybrid" won't involve destroying the H2's!!!

Hi Telecat ~ I've seen the Asapara site before and I'm going to measure some tractrix horns similar to the ones Brian Taylor is using on HL1 HLR http://www.p-audio.co.uk/products/P-Audio_PH-942_2... to see if they improve on the H2's. The bass section will be based upon the H1 http://www.acoustica.org.uk/impulse/images/H1_3.gi...Maybe you should have a look at the designers latest designs.

Good to hear. I barely have the room for the Lali's so god knows how big you room is if H2's can't fill it!!!
94db/W is great but it a biggish room ( 130m3 ) and I listen loud so the H2s struggle if there's a lot of bass. There's only so much punishment the bass driver's foam surrounds are going to take. Edited by Crackie on Wednesday 8th August 07:48

Circa late 80s. Wish I still had it as it was a work of art. Replaced with a BS9000 with 6' Penta Lab speakers that now never gets played as all my stuff is on iTunes.
Very nice indeed! Wonder what that would cost now?Liking the funky Akai gear above, too
As promised, a few more bits I picked up to contrast the all silver stuff..
Rotel RA-970BX amp, Rotel RCD-965BX CD and a Technics cassette deck I forgot I had so I just lobbed it in to the pic..
30 odd year old ARC 101's.Still sounding great, although they have been recovered..

I didnt realise I was into Retro HI-FI's until I looked at this thread, I just like well built, chucky stuff that sounds good... Didnt realise how old my Hifi gear is until I looked through this thread lol.
Show us To be honest, I wouldn't declare the Rotel stuff I just picked up as retro, but it is nice older gear.
Bit of a long winded ( and possibly stupid... ) question, but essentially have any of you guys got experience of connecting up modern AV equipment to retro hi-fi?
I have been looking around for a powerful late 70's / early 80's, old school, silver finish seperates system with matching speakers and found a lovely little shop in Exeter that sells exactly these! ( Emporium on Heavitree road if you find yourself in the area )
Question is can you connect up these old amps to run the sound for modern TV / DVD's as well - obviously most amps will have a couple of input / source connection points for CD players, turntables etc - but are these compatible with modern AV gear as well, as i doubt that one can be found with a scart or optical connection?
Thinking of running the flat screen and DVD player ( which may double as CD player until i find one that i like ) through the amp. Did this years ago when a student, with a long since sold Akai amp and loved the sound, but not too sure how they work with current stuff as that tv had conventional speaker outlets which could connect to the amp, rather than the optical ones that seem to be current.
I do something similar already with a Samsung flat screen, connected via the optical outlet to a modern seperates amp and dvd player, which then feeds some bookshelf speakers / subwoofer which sounds great. I would like to do something similar in the front room as well, only retro this time as I love the "warmer" sound that they can provide as well as the obvious good looks. You can play DVD's through the new system but can only get the TV signal by using the optical connection, hence the confusion.

DVD player should be no problem since it'll have standard phono/rca L/R outs as well as digital co-ax/optical, your tv will most likely have a 3.5mm jack headphone out you can use with a 3.5mm to phono cable (everyone calls this an 'ipod cable' now), or use the audio from a SCART connector, you can get SCART to phono cables or SCART to phono adaptors which will give you your audio out signals to your retro amp/receiver of choice. I use an 1981 Yamaha receiver I got on ebay for £12 for my tv/dvd sound and it's great
