Two Questions about Sonos
Discussion
Sorry to hijack the thread, but am I right in thinking you can't use the Sonos system to connect to exsisting speakers? For example, if I had a Sonos Play5 in the kitchen, I wouldn't be able to connect to my Panasonic surround sound in the lounge?
ETA: Nevermind I think I've just answered that. I would need to use CONNECT or CONNECT:AMP?

Another quick question. The Sonos units obviously need to be on all the time, do they use much power when they are not being used (standby?)
Sonos quote about 6.5 watts standby consumption. I have 7 Sonos units, so the system uses about 1kWh a day to run. At my current rate, that is costing me £40 a year.It is worth it to me, because if I had to switch each unit on every time I wanted to use it and wait for it to initialise and connect to the network, I'd use them much less and it would defeat the object of multi-room music.
It is not very environmetally friendly, though, and I hope this is one of the things that will be improved with future units.

I think that the other tangential indicator of quality is when you look at eBay. There is very little sonos gear for sale, and it trades at close to the brand new price.
Would seem to indicate that once people buy, they don't then tell to sell it on!!

Yes that's a very valid point.Would seem to indicate that once people buy, they don't then tell to sell it on!!

I've been thinking about a Sonos system for the house, but have been disappointed with the sound from the Play:3 & Play:5 when I listened to them in a shop (John Lewis). It just sounded like what it was, a little box trying to make a big sound and giving a very flat, unexciting listen. I was however impressed by the sound from a ZP120 linked to some Q Acoustic 2010s, but the cost involved in that type of set up at approx £500 a room is just prohibitive.
Is it just the listening environment letting the Play down or am I expecting too much for what it is?

I'm another person interested in getting into Sonos but not sure what to do ref NAS. IS there a simple NAS that works well with Sonos and Itunes including lossless files?
Go for something easy to set up like a Netgear or Buffalo ... iTunes doesn't recognise FLAC files so unless you want to have two copies of everything, you may need to think about Apple lossless which there should be no difference in quality but you're tied to Apple. Marvindodgers said:

I think you're expecting too much from it. The emphasis is on the ease of use, portability and accessing music using an Apple or Android device. Play3 & 5's aren't audiophile products but can add zones of audio to a new or existing system very cost effectively. Is it just the listening environment letting the Play down or am I expecting too much for what it is?
The sound from a pair of free standing speakers and a ZP120 will be far better. Until there is a true competitor to Sonos, I don't think you'll see any costs reducing.
