Interesting looking at this thread..so many pictures with speakers parked very close to walls I cant believe they can sound that good?i need about 4 feet clear of all walls to get anything like the right balance of sound from mine and the more room the better..and ive tried a lot...otherwise just slow 'boomy' bass.

If I'm having a listen I pull mine forwards. I also have the bungs to put in the rear if the bass is a bit overpowering. Still experimenting with them though.

Plenty of speakers are designed to work close to the rear wall, and some (most Naim speakers, for example) work best as close to the rear wall as is possible. With many UK houses having modestly sized living rooms, needing speakers to be four feet from any wall would be impossible for most people.

Yup - my Naim SL2s in my main system (and the previous Naim SBLs - they are now in my study) work best hard up against the wall

Roksan Oxygene integrated amp
Roksan Oxygene CD
Roksan Ojan 3 speakers bi-wired, will bi-amp soon as I find another Klout.
Linn Klout power amp
Myriad headphone amp
Mainly Chord interconnects
Rega DAC R
Rega RP3
Sennheiset RF cordless headphones ( forget the model)

Good mix of old and new which all seem to work very well together and use it to deliver t.v. sound but struggle somtimes syncing the soundtrack to the visuals. Picking up on several comments. I have my speakers off the walls by about 2 feet and they sound better for it.

Very nice!

I’ve never heard meridian speakers, would be interested in hearing your take on them.

Sadly I doubt I could bring myself to pay the asking on their floorstanders but have been considering some s/h dsp3200’s for use in my living room, possibly paired with a main uniti.

I know I appreciate that..not many people using Sbls though in the pictures.

Silly question for you - have you had the drive replaced in the G98 yet? I've got a couple of Meridian players (598 & G91), both will failing ROM drives. Meridian won't service these units any more, and I'm struggling to find anyone who can. The old 'Meridian Legacy' outfit has ceased trading, and no-one seems to have appeared to offer a similar service.

The G98 drive has never been replaced, however it is rarely used now as the Marantz is a multi-format spinner.

I believe Bob Stuart has left Meridian as well so not sure in which direction they will go.
The 861V8 certainly needs some updated cards.

Try calling Jack Lawson at The Music Room up in Glasgow he tends to know the best Indys for most brands

I’ve had my CD player since 1998, pre and power since 1999!
Changed my speakers two years ago, the previous ones were nearly 20 years old and weren’t doing the electronics justice.

My only change in the last decade was the wifi element, and I've even done that in arguably the oldest-school way I could smile

I stuck with my Meridian DSP speakers for over 20 years, sure I moved to newer models when they went from 18bit to 24bit and then upsampling etc. but pretty much the same for 20 odd years.

It was only when buying kit for a new lounge that I fell in love with the little Quad ribbon speakers and Quads current dumping amps. The fact I was using Roon with room eq etc. helped it sound so good too.

It's a disease - and it always was.

I used to work in the hifi industry many years ago and there was always something 'new' to tempt buyers.... "it was if a thin veil of gauze had been removed from the speakers" would be the typical comment to tease buyers into audio heaven. smile

I've always thought there is a good analogy with photography.

Both subjects deal with an analogue 'source', but require a bunch of technology to reproduce it.

In both there's a kinda 'sky's the limit' on money you can spend.

In both there's always something new that's a little bit better resolution.

There's always an upgrade, and more expense!

And there's always the 'Is what that guy's got better than what I've got' envy.. hehe
