55" OLED or 65" LED TV...
Discussion
Afternoon all, I was wondering if the current thinking has changed much regarding what's recommended in the sub £1500 sector at the moment?
My current Panasonic plasma 55VT30B has recently gone pop and I'm looking at a replacement, most likely a 55" or 58". I'm off to have a look round some of the local stores later and current models on the shortlist for closer inspection are LG 55B6V and Panasonic 58DX902B. I don't mind spending less, especially if the set will be underused in terms of what I'm watching most frequently - currently mostly just SKY HD with the occasional BR DVD.
Any thoughts or advice welcome, thank you.

Take a look at the OLED. It'll either blow you away (in which case you won't want anything else) or you won't be able to see what the fuss is about. if you can't see the difference in the OLED you can very safely spend a lot less on a decent LED, the Panasonic you have linked is well regarded. My current Panasonic plasma 55VT30B has recently gone pop and I'm looking at a replacement, most likely a 55" or 58". You might need to be quick with the B6, it's being replaced very soon (so it's at a good price right now).

So is the DX902B.
£1199 including vat at Costco, in store only though.
Richer Sounds 'should' price beat this. I say 'should' as i spoke to my local store and RS phone sales who both refused stating Costco wasnt somebody they would match against due to its membership. However, through a post on AVForums, i recently learnt that the RS terms state that Costco can be used (https://www.richersounds.com/information/pricebeat) or maybe its been updated since i asked in April.£1199 including vat at Costco, in store only though.
In the end i just went to Costco, joined up and bought the set and am very pleased with it.

My local RS (Milton Keynes) said they wouldn't price-match Costco because they don't offer an equivalent guarantee. Couldn't find stock of it in the Milton Keynes Costco anyway. In the end i just went to Costco, joined up and bought the set and am very pleased with it.
Used to really rate RS, but the last few times I've been in there they've been unwilling to budge and don't seem to offer the level of service they pride themselves on. I'm sure it varies from store to store.
I did wonder if my comments re the B6 might get a bit of "wtf" attention, and I was right.
All the reviews I read said the XD93 trumped for brightness, natural colours, and most importantly upscaling. The XD93 had the best upscaling ability of pretty much any panel on sale. Add on to this the motionflow and I was sold.
It's pretty irrelevant now because the XD93 can't really be found in many places, but as said, I chose the XD93 over the B6 for those reasons.

Each to their own. As I've said a few times, the first time I saw an OLED it just blew me away like no other display I've ever seen. Once I saw one I knew I wouldn't be buying an LCD, but if OLED doesn't affect you like that then you can save yourself a lot of money. I know people in both camps. All the reviews I read said the XD93 trumped for brightness, natural colours, and most importantly upscaling. I'm a massive Samsung LED/LCD fan. Last 3 sets have been Samsung and I've been very happy with them and I still am with my latest. They give a huge amount for the money imo.
That said, the LG OLED does have a better picture; I've just never wanted to spend the extra. I think next year though all that will change and I will have to bite the bullet and go OLED.
At the end of the day it is horses for courses, and budgets and uses, but there is no doubt in my mind that OLED is better if your budget is not a constraint.

High-end OLED, I agree. But as above, I'm of the opinion that avery high-end LCD/LED currently outperforms a low end OLED in many areas that are important e.g upscaling, motion and brightness.kmpowell said:

Still really pleased with my XD93 but almost wishing I'd stretched to the 65"!

Agreed. If all your viewing and sources are SD or 1080i HD you're probably better off with LCD where insane, eye bleeding brightness and decent upsampling can make up for the ropey resolution.
However, 4K HDR from UHD disc or streamed from Netflix, Amazon, YouTube etc can make for epic viewing.
Personally I've never been 'that' impressed with LCD so moved from Plasma straight to OLED a while back.
Unless things change dramatically my next set will be another OLED too.
I also like the fact that the whole 65" set weighs less than the power supply for the plasma

I've been thinking about oled's for 18 months now, but just can't stomach the price for a 65"er.
So, Panasonic 65DX902B (last years top-of-the-range FALD model) is up for £2k (minus 5%) at John Lewis. Apart from a slight reservation on viewing angles, I wonder if a 37ms response time will hamper my BF1 game playing. Anyone hazard a guess on how it compares to my 10 year old 42" Panny plasma? Thanks.

Generally, Plasma is better than LCD for gaming though LCD's have got a lot better lately. 37ms is fairly low, shouldn't be noticable.
I wish I hadn't taken a look at the LG site. The W7 looks awesome! (yes, I know it's £8000)
