I have a Yamaha CRX-M170 amp/DAB/CD player. It's about 20 years old I guess and it's brilliant. Mark-insert old BMW said:
What speakers do you use with it? I've been looking at getting something to use upstairs and some of the older Yamaha kit seems a steal.
I have a pair of Eltax Symphony 6.4. floorstanders. I was in Richer Sounds Watford one day and they had them new but in a water damaged box for £50 the pair. Bought them as a gamble, they were perfectly dry inside the packaging and perform pretty well. My system is finished off with an Audio Techinca LP120 turntable. It's a pretty cheap set up but fine for my needs.
I've got quite cheap hearing anyway. Once equipment gets above stuff from Argos I can rarely hear much difference.
I have a couple of Pioneer amps (A300 & A400) and a Nakamichi Amplifier 2. The A400 I bought new in the late 80's or early 90's and the other 2 were from boot fairs and about £25 - 30 each. I did have some Mission 770 speakers but they were poorly stored and the damp destroyed them sadly. I found a pair of Mordaunt Short MS55TI locally via FaceBook for £40 and a pair of Tannoy for just over a tenner on eBay, plus £15 shipping. I'm looking for a turntable at the moment. I always dreamed of owning a Transcriptor Reference but they're way over my budget, but hopefully I can get a Fons CQ30 with an SME arm, which is what I had in my youth. I made the mistake of loaning it to someone though and never saw it again. I just love the look of vintage HiFi equipment and would really like some old Quad separates. I used to go to Graham Chapmans (Monty Python) and he had various bits laying about in various states of disrepair. I wish I'd taken it when it was offered, although I know nothing about valves etc. It sounded lovely through the B&O speakers he had there though.

I have just made involuntary sex noises at that rack mount gear. I'll send you the dry cleaning bill.
I'd love the AIWA top spec midi system from the mid 80s with the 6 tape changer. It had AFBS with microphones and all sorts of stuff and a pre power amp.
I had the pre power amp as a youngster. Purchased from Beaver Radio in Liverpool.

Only just found this thread, but it's got me spending money already!
My main system isn't too vintage - Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista CD player, with PMC floorstanders with Bryston amps, but I can't really use it at volume because the house walls are so thin, and I like my neighbours!
My garage/workshop is set away from houses though, so it's an opportunity to crank it up a little. Up till today I was using a mid 90's Panasonic mini system running into Rogers LS1 bookshelf speakers. This thread had inspired me to find something a little better!
Long story short, I found a Denon DRA-F101 receiver in cash converters for the grand sum of £50. It was made between '02 and '06, so not proper vintage, but neither is it in the first flush of youth. It performs so much better than the Panasonic though, taking control of the Rogers and producing a much clearer, crisper sound. Well happy!
Perfect fit on the shelf as well!

Loving those brochures.
I suspect they would fetch some money on Ebay.
I'd be interested in them if you wanted to sell them, as I'd scan them for my Vintage Technics website. https://vintagetechnics.audio/

But now I do, and I absolutely do - thanks a bunch.
Just going to leave the details of a shop that's local to me

Still running a Kenwood compact system from around 1995 for the Dolby 5.1 surround out of the the SkyQ box. I think it's a UD403 although it says RXD-4L on the front?
It has a 3 CD disc change unit, twin cassettes and definitely two big rear speakers, two smaller front speakers and a centre speaker that I've kept just behind the TV. It sill sounds really good after all these years and the separation, especially in a big films, is excellent.

I'd like to say I was sorry... But now I do, and I absolutely do - thanks a bunch.
But if you do get one, I'd like to come to your house and have a play.

Those Tannoy a few posts back are just lovely. I bought a pair of smaller Tannoy a few weeks back on eBay for the princely sum of £10.71. I can't recall the model but I'll check later. I hooked them up to a Pioneer A300, which was a £40 boot fair find in Truro back in the summer.
ETA - Tannoy M15
Any suggestions for an entry level turntable? I used to have a Fons with SME arm back in the day and there's a near identical one on eBay but its £395 so out of budget sadly.
another who's just found this thread. lovely stuff.
I am the bloke who treated himself to the Yamaha dolby A, B and S tape deck (apologies; forgot what model it was but it was £300 back then), predominantly so I could play decent music in the car. About 3 months after this acquisition; the recordable CD became available..
I still have my Technics SUV-303 class A amp (purchased new in 19080ish on my apprentice wages)- soon to be my garage amp.
I sourced some nice kit from the bay in recent times, by way of upgrading, including a pair of Tannoy sixes, a Marantz CD63 mk2 SE and a Nad C320Bee which is my main listen nowadays.
