I think the telly is supposed to inbetween the speakers
Why do you not use the speakers for the TV too, Guessing you have a good sub to go with the soundbar?
Well, where on earth would I put the speakers if they were used with the telly? Why do you not use the speakers for the TV too, Guessing you have a good sub to go with the soundbar?
It’s a simple set up. Yamaha soundbar with bass unit in the receiver, and a separate hifi. Simple wiring and a pure hifi which I feel lucky to have.

Appreciate the setup makes it non viable. Just a shame to have good quality floorstanders, and not use them for everything. As many TV shows and movies have such time and love spent on their soundtracks, and lower frequencies are so important to TV viewing. It’s a simple set up. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and we are happy with our choice. The Yamaha under the soundbar delivers a lot of bass and can go loud enough without distorting. Sure, I’d like to convert the downstairs spare bedroom into a cinema, but I have other hobbies and interests.
And a wife…

A few changes since I last posted on the thread back in 2018.
The Garrard 301 has been swapped out for a Systemdek Signature. I've had the Systemdek for a while, but back in 2018 it was in storage. We'd just moved into a new house, and I couldn't summon the energy to unbox and hoist the 65kg lump onto the top of the stand. It's currently fitted with an SME 312S arm, but it sounds better with the 12" Audio Origami PU7 it came with. That however is U/S at the moment, because one of the cartridge tags has come loose, and the internal wiring in the arm is, for me anyway, impossible to solder. It'll have to go back to Johnny 7 for repair.
The other major change is to the Music Store/Streamer. I bought a InnuOS ZENith to replace an ageing Naim HDX. It's a good sounding bit of kit. Better than the Naim? It's different. On balance, to my ears, better different. That feeds into the Naim NAC252/NAP300/ Supercap combo via a TeddyDAC.
Still using the Naim Superline powered by a Teddy Supercap. Speakers are Quad 2805's.
I'd love to hear how this sounds... but failing that could you tell me how the 2805's sound, I've never heard music played through electrostatics, are they very different to boxes ?The Garrard 301 has been swapped out for a Systemdek Signature. Square woofers! Lovely.
Ironically, if my memory serves me correctly, there are good old round woofers behind those square panels.Sony were 'playing' on their higher end APM woofers when they made these.
EDIT Nope I was wrong - these are indeed APM woofers. My mistake!
There were some cheaper units though, that had 'fake' APM woofers.

It's going to be hard to describe. For me, where electrostatics excel is in Classical, Jazz and Opera. Mine aren't so good at Rock (assuming you're one of the people that like to stick their heads in the bass bins at concerts) - they do do bass, but not the kind of deep extended bass that makes your trousers flap. Other than the bass, the presentation of sounds is to my ears natural. Instruments sound like they do in a live environment, as do voices. Soundstage is natural too.I've had a few electrostatics over the years - Quad ESL63's, 989's and latterly the 2805's. There isn't much difference between the 2805 and 989 IMHO, except perhaps in terms of keeping the wife happy. The 989's are monsters. I've also had Martin Logans - the ones with an electrostatic panel to cover the mid range and HFs, and a conventional coned woofer. They did low low bass better than the Quads, but overall the package was inferior. To me anyway.
Just to be fair, the second system in the house - a Naim Supernait with the Naim HDX is run into a pair of B&W805s, and I'm really happy with the sound that that system makes. So I'm not an electrostatic only bloke. That's the go to system for listening to Led Zeppelin!

Anyway, the FH-909r superseded me by a few months, but it's replacement - can't remember the model number - was just as outrageous in both looks, performance and price. It was 4 MIDI separates in an odd-but-cool grey 'feltish' finish (no, really), which each weighed a ton with speakers to match and cost £1099 - in 1990.

When I were a lad, I worked in a mid-range independent HiFi specialist just after i left school. We stocked some of the greats - Akai, Aiwa, Yamaha, Sony, Technics (We could just stock and sell SL-1210s all day long if we wanted to)

I used to spend hours in a small independent in Brighton looking at separates. They were probably sick of me to be honest. I did eventually buy my Sony separates from them which are still going strong just shy of 30 years later. Main System
Rega RP6 + Exact
Rega Elex R
Rega Ear Mk II
B&W 603's
Bluesound Node 2i
Chord Qutest DAC
Hifiman Sundara
Meze 99 Classics
A mixture of Covid induced upgradeitis and "I want to get back into vinyl!" sprinkled with a liberal dose of "what do you mean the neighbours don't want to listen to Boards of Canada at 1am?" meant investing in some cans and a headphone amp. Room calmed down with some DIY room treatment.
