Cassette deck envy....

mmm that Denon makes me want another. Had a DR10HX and thought it was the mutts at the time.
I found a Kenwood KX-5010 via eBay at 180 notes and I know the beating would be horrific if I got it. Like medieval.

Having a last day of shift couple of old fashioned’s in the 3/4 finished den. No lights just a salt lamp at the moment haha

New speakers arrived this week, the stands are delayed but I couldn’t just leave them in the box!

Naim Uniti Atom, Proac Tablette 10 Signatures, and Solid Steel stands on the way next week.
TV is a 15 year old Panasonic plasma still going strong.

In the meantime I’ve turned some plastic plant pots upside down.
I’m expecting a jump in the sound, otherwise I’m onto the “Snake Oil” thread !!

You should get a jump in sound cannot think of much worse than upside down plant pots as makeshift stands!

Why did some turntables come with strobe dots on the platter but no strobe. Was it in case you wanted to fire your own stand alone strobe at it? Did anyone actually do that?
They relied in light from AC incandescent bulbs, which provide a source of 50Hz illumination.

Turntables with a built in strobe lamp use a neon driven directly from the mains.
Incandescent bulbs do not strobe - they're basically small heaters - most old fluorescent lighting will pulse in sync with the mains.

They do actually strobe - it can be difficult to see - but I have used them on many occasions for the purpose.

Nakamichi meant you had arrived in hi fi terms. A word to be whispered in reverence.

I remember the dealer we originally went to was super-sniffy about us wanting a deck, but when we went to ano and heard the N2 we were blown away and bought it on the spot.

I'm seriously considering investing in tape deck but just know its going to be a hiding to nothing as I'd be having to shell out for cassettes to tape on.

But loving your system!

I had a Kenwood KX-5010 back in the day, I'd do anything to get it back!

How do you find sourcing blank media?
I don't have much call for recording these days; I mostly either listen to pre-recorded tapes or my parent's old stuff, no-one else I know has a tape deck so making mixtapes or copies of expensive albums to lend out is a bit pointless, and recording for personal use doesn't make much sense given the original is about 6 inches away laugh

I got mine from retrostylemedia in Portsmouth, they've got all sorts of sealed blanks from the incredibly cheap-feeling modern ferrics to metal type IVs at £20+ a pop. Personally I like to buy the production samples at 99p each since you could strike gold and get a great cassette album for next to nothing, but it looks like they've run out since. Anyway there's no shortage of crap music on cassette I'd be happy to record over if worst comes to worst!

And as for the strobe lights, there's an app for that...

I think Teddy needs to think about how AC current flows through the filament....

I had a Technics RSB405.
I wouldn't want to go back to cassette now, always seemed to be pretty compromised.

I did hear a back to back demo of cassette vs DCC. I thought DCC was far better. Anybody remember DCC?

DCC had great sound quality - though was doomed to failure as my father was an early adopter.....

He went with betamax, was an admirer of Laser disk and bought home an acorn electron before we were old enough to give advice....

DCC / Minidisc battle!

Amazingly one of the only format wars that Sony actually won. Think I had 4 players all told. 2 fullsize, 1 walkman and in car....

I have that CD player also the Bluesound.

The CD player is sitting unused as I have gone 100% streaming - my hearing is not what it was, so I can't tell! smile
How much would you want for it?
Am currently using 308 pre, x200s and an x24k dac but source is just a mid range dvd player.. Could be tempted to get a better cd player and lose the (admittedly cool looking) dac..

I have posted my main system before a few years ago, Arcam C31 pre amp, 2 x P35 power amps feeding my Monitor Audio PL200. Along with PL350 centre and some Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 rears powered by a Pioneer surround amp and a sub, model I can't remember.

Recently sold my old house and will be moving into a new place in the next few months.
It has a downstairs kitchen and dining room, so I decided to look out for some 2nd system equipment.

Saw a set of Monitor Audio Bronze 6 up in Yate, some 130 miles from where I currently live. Drove up early last Saturday morning to collect as I got them for a decent price and they get great reviews online.

The same day on facebook marketplace i spotted a set of Wharfedale Pacific Evo 30 MK2', Wharfedale Daimond DFS18 rears and Evo centre speaker for sale, 10 miles away, at a great price. The following day i had a tiny flat full of speakers laugh

Today the amp, a Marantz PM6005, i won on ebay arrived so I could finally audition the 2 different sets of floorstanders.

Despite being a really old speaker in comparison, the Wharfedales wiped the floor with the Monitor Audios, but then in their day they were a much higher range, more on a level with Silver or Gold from M.A.

For a system that cost less than £430, cables and banana plugs included, it sounds brilliant, old Wharfedale gear is excellent value for money.

I had one of these as part of my set up in my 172 Cup. £550 back in 2002. I once gave a lunchtime lift to a colleague, he got in, looked at the head unit and said 'feckin ell, the French don't half put some st in their cars'

Philistine.

Oh yes.
That fits "What's you HiFi set up?" on a car forum

Had a Nakamichi CD600 head unit in my old BMW in 2001?. Combined with Diamond Audio Black Series speaker seperates at the front with 12" sub at rear, and a big Alpine V12 amp - put simply it sounded better at times than my system in the longe I was using!

Still have the speakers upstairs somewhere plus a couple of bits for next install. C'ant photo easily though at moment.

Ah. When Car Audio was frequently worth five or six times the cost of your car - good times.
I was never rich enough to afford Nakamichi gear, but I did have an Alpine 7390M Head Unit with two older matching amps, one of which was a Class A model literally the size of a shoebox. The sound out of those was amazing.
(For a bit of extra geekery, I always used 'That's' audio cassettes - anyone remember those?)

Yes I do but went limping back to TDK.

I was a Pioneer Fan boy but the setup I had in the R5 GTT was shocking. Kicker Amps, Alpine Subs, Pioneer 6 x 9's and I think 5's at the front? Girlfriend at the time could hear me coming around the corner... not my proudest moment.
