I had a CRT in my room, but replaced it for a 28" Flat Screen.. I watch abit of TV but mostly Xbox on it, and Xbox over the HDMI.. CRT doesn't come close i'm afraid.

Of course it won't when comparing SD to HD.

SD on a CRT is still better than any flat scrren out there, but as soon as you start to move towards HD content then a nice plasma would be far superior (or maybe an lcd).

I agree, but for my useage.. A Flatscreen is alot better than a CRT.

Plus the flatscreen sits nicely against the wall, rather than taking up lots of room behind.

Though, I do have a CRT in the living room where no Xbox/HD is played smile

Of course, and people wil continue to migrate to them as they invest in HD playing equipment, sky hd becomes cheaper, freeview HD comes around etc etc.

ALthough my fathers old CRT was great for SD, I'm still gobsmacked everytime I put some good HD footage on the Kuro. 'Life' on BBC HD really is something!

Despite the picture being better?
My plasma flattens the CRT it replaced in pretty much every area, regardless of signal source.
Are people comparing good CRTs with indifferent plasmas?
No, people in this thread (up until your comment anyway as I have not yet read further) appear to be comparing good CRTs to LCDs which as we all know do not cope well with panning, for example, and fast motion and suffer various artifacts including blocking. Plasma as we know is superior technology to LCD.
I know the thread is about the JL salesman and comments about where to stick the remote and a bent-coathanger aerial but... I just to say replaced my 10 year old (top of the range at the time) Panasonic 28" CRT with a Panny Viera 32" LCD and it's sigificantly better on SD, HD and DVD. No question, no debate, just miles better smile

May as well continue the off-topic theme as much as I love the JL experience smile

I still miss my lump of a Panny TX32 CRT. Excellent picture. Since then bought a couple of projectors Epson TW10 and sanyo z3), and currently use a Panny PW6 plasma panel. Sky HD can look superb on it even though it's not a true HD panel.

The future looks interesting but I think you'd have to be mad to buy into at the moment judging by this price. . .

anyone know if JL on Oxford Street have one of these on display?

We have a 32" Bang & Olufsen CRT and i cant find anything i like 1/2 as much.

I still think it looks modern and stylish. It always gets admiring glances and remarks.

was looking at the 60" bad boys the other day and boy, they are impressive!
Totaly agree with this. We have a couple of the B&O CRT's which are fantastic, brilliant SD picture and sound. Aesthetically prefer them to our bigger B&O LCD's. The form of the Avants is so completely differant that they completely hide their bulk.
I gave away my old 28" CRT B&O to my sister went I went off sailing for 6 months, and we bought a new Beovision 7 when we got back.

The picture on the new LCD is superb, but.... the picture on the old MX is still superb.

My old man has a B&O LX2502, which dates back to around 1986, still used every day, and still an absolutely superb picture on it.

It's the old thing, buy quality, buy once. Can't beat a good B&O.

The Avant 32 is starting to look like an absolute bargain second hand if you can be bothered to shift one, they're selling for a few hundred now, and the picture quality is absolutely amazing.

I had a Sony CRT for about 15 years, it started to go on the blink last year so spent a great time hurting my eyes looking at the motion-blur-luminescent-ish LCDs and finally went for a SD 40" Panasonic plasma. At the right distance, with my eyes, with a normal aerial signal it looks great - as good as the CRT, the best bit is that I can now see 'Clint Eastwood' instead of 'nt Eastw'

I'd say that the JL salesman has put a sale or two in the bank with that attitude, what a change from the ignorant sleep walking teenagers in Coories and Dixsmiths.

Always seems like a treat when you encounter a salesperson who does the job properly. I find JL to be an example to many of the cant be arsed muppets you meet in other shops.
Should be the norm, though its probably down to how much they get paid.
The pay is inline with other shops TBH, although the bonus is an obvious attraction.

The customer service is to do with dept. managers being graded much more on customer service than on sales (although obviously this does come into it.)

I remember talking a c/m down from a £500 washing machine to a £300 model, she wrote a letter to the MD of the store, did I get a bking for effectively losing a £200 sale? Nope, got a 'well-done.'

JL are well aware of how many sales are directly related to customers wanting the JL level of service, which is why its pushed upon their sales assitants so much.

Just to throw a small spanner in the works, do we realise that a small CRT actually has a higher definition than a 42" HD screen wink

And HD was introduced to bring back half decent picture quality to larger screens.
