55” Choice - LGOLED55B7 v Samsung QE55Q6FN
Discussion
I’m looking at upgrading the trusty Panasonic 37” we’ve had for the last 12 years.
Signed up to Sky Q over the weekend and therefore looking for a screen to do justice to F1, other sports and movies.
The Samsung is a 2018 model I understand whereas the LG is a 2017 model albeit with a nicer looking super slim screen.
Anyone have any experience of either or recommendations on which one, or an alternative of course, at this size?

Done to death here. But imo the things you need to consider 1.how.much light is in the room when you watch TV 2. Do you watch alot of sports?.
I watch my B7 mostly in the evenings with low light which is perfect for a OLED TV and in these conditions stomps all over the Samsung. Additionally my mates QLED seems to be better when watching the football but as I don't usually watch sports I can live with this compromise.

Had my B7 for a year now (three years of LG OLED in total) and I cannot watch any of the LED screens any more. Agree with the above about LED will be brighter during the day time in a very good lit room. Regarding sports, watched world cup and had no complaints, especially with the BBC UHD, depends on the broadcaster to be honest: BBC great, ITV is 50/50. Get it from John Lewis if you can, 5 years transferrable warranty and best customer service imho.

A mixture of both the would say but certainly low light movies would be a good box to tick I watch my B7 mostly in the evenings with low light which is perfect for a OLED TV and in these conditions stomps all over the Samsung. I used to have a Samsung 46 LED screen which started losing the colours on the right side of the panel just outside of the 2 year warranty, Samsung wouldn't help with fixing it at all and just wanted to charge to have it looked at, I can understand its just outside the warranty but you would hope for a bit of help with such an issue, you don't expect an expensive TV to just start losing its colours after only 2 years use!
Due to this I just moved it to the bedroom for occasional viewing and bought an LG B7 and the difference is huge, of course the Samsung I had wasn't in the same league anyway, but the experience with their customer service soured my opinion of them so I didn't even consider another after this.
I havent had any issues with the LG so far after about a years use so will see how it goes long term, picture quality is very good though and I was even pretty impressed with the sound it produces from the TV alone, although since have a soundbar to improve it some more.

This! Bought mine from JL and very pleased i did just for warranty alone (i've had to ue their warranty process before with audio equipment). The oled needs some calibration (but plenty of options on the internet) and when you get it right it’s amazing . Also seems better after a couple of months viewing (not sure why). Source has to be good . I would also say I think it’s great with sport - I thought this was actually a strong point

That’s good to know as the F1, football and cricket are watched often in our house. The Currys advisor I spoke to said that both Samsung QLED and Sony OLED are far better than LG on sports which did give me some food for thought. I’m trying to see if the budget will stretch to a 2018 LG OLED55C8PLA.....

Btw not saying it's a bad experience. Just noting that a good Samsung LED to my eyes is better for sports and gaming (might be the brightness/slightly quicker response times)Moley RUFC said:

Probably best making a list of TVs you have seen which you like and looking up independent reviews online to see what they say about them, I never trust the people in those shops, could be incentives given by the manufacturers to sell certain amounts etc.

Off topic, but you should have paid for the £50 inspection at a local service agent, it's standard practise. Once the tv is written off by the repair workshop you'll then get a percentage towards a new tv. I got 40% off a new Samsung when my 3.5 year old 8 series died, bearing in mind the warranty was only 12 months I found Samsung to be extremely helpful.Due to this I just moved it to the bedroom for occasional viewing and bought an LG B7 and the difference is huge, of course the Samsung I had wasn't in the same league anyway, but the experience with their customer service soured my opinion of them so I didn't even consider another after this.

Which one is more expensive out of the ones the Curry's advisor recommended? Presumably the Samsung and Sony

Yep that’s the current action. To be fair to the guy they were all £1,799 however he may well have a better commission/sales bonus on one brand over the other of course!Probably best making a list of TVs you have seen which you like and looking up independent reviews online to see what they say about them, I never trust the people in those shops, could be incentives given by the manufacturers to sell certain amounts etc.

If they had done it like you suggested then it would have been a different outcome im sure and I would likely have gone for a new QLED if I had a discount like that, as it is I will likely never buy another Samsung TV due to their poor service, plenty other good brands around with comparable TVs available.
Just my experience though, hopefully not the general one...

I picked up a 55B7 a couple of months ago and have just managed to get it all wall mounted and connected up. I also treated myself to an Apple TV 4K so now I have a full rig running 4K (Denon Receiver which is also 4K).
Having come from a 12 year old 42" Panasonic plasma I am simply blown away with the new panel. The apps on the Apple TV are also leagues ahead of the old Roku 3 with Plex, Prime, Now TV and iPlayer all looking stunning. I ran some 4K youtube videos and the detail is incredible.
I can't recommend the B7 (paired with an Apple TV 4K) enough although it is still early days.
