Why so many and so confusing ??

Hope i can get some info from you guys.
I went in to a shop today wanting a samsung 42" 1080p tv, As we walked through the door there was a 46" for the price i wanted to pay £600 we asked about it but got told that because it was lcd it was not very kid freindly and the pictures were not very good on lcd`s. We started looking at panasonic plasma ones but we got put of by been told not to watch the same program for to long if it had a symbol as it would burn the screen. Think im back to lcd`s now.
I want a 42" lcd panasonic that i can watch motor racing on and have a good quality picture. What model should i go for ?? Im confused with the whole thing about tv`s now.
