Really looking forward this...Alien meets Event Horizon apparently...'bout time we had seriosly creepy sc-fi again.

What? Solaris a disaster, really? How so? I think it achieved exactly what it set out to do, and dealt with some interesting questions about reality and who you really are, who other people are to you etc. Add that to the beautiful set design/special effects some awesome acting by Natasha McEllhone (sp) (the bit where he leaves her is heartbreaking) add the lovely soundtrack and you end up with one of the best hard sci-fi films in ages.

If an alien came down to earth, I was appointed film-liason and was teaching this alien about sci-fi films it's one of the three or four I would show him/her/it (along with sunshine, dark city, Gattaca)

Sorry for hijacking your thread..have not heard anything about Pandorum. Your description sounds interesting though, I wonder how I find out more without ruining the film for me; I'd like to go into it knowing as little as possible. Personally I dislike watching trailers; nearly spoilt cloverfield for me and countless other films, they should all be like the ones for district 9.

Lets agree to differ...IMDB voters (29,000+ of them) give it 6.2 out of 10 and I feel they've seriously over-scored it.

Back on track though...

The clip I've linked to doesn't give anything away at all - in fact I'm led to believe that the film leads you down one path only at the end to reveal itself as something completely different.

Enjoy.

ETA: I caught the 1st TV advert for this tonight and it does come across as remarkably like Event Horizon.

Have to agree. I think Solaris is an excellent film. It doesn't surprise me that it doesn't score well from the general public though - but then they scored resident evil 6.2. The public in general has no taste.

I was planning to go and see it tomorrow, however I'm now just contemplating getting a crate and a takeaway and watching Event Horizon at volume 11 .... The GF hasn't seen Event Horizon yet too.

She'll hate you for it. Saw it the US when it came out (knowing nothing about it) and my O/H was not happy when we came out. Come to that, neither was I. I was expecting something akin to Star Wars or The Black Hole. Boy was I wrong.

Good film though, even if it did scare the crap out of me.

Solaris gets a lot of bad press from the masses simply because the studio marketed it incorrectly. All the trailers paint it as a completely different film. As a result the underlying memory a lot of people hold is being disappointed because they were ultimately lied to.

Saw it last night and...well...its no Event Horizon or Alien

7 out of 10 (7.5 if I'm feeling generous)

Think 'The Descent' in Space with a couple of very minor twists along the way.

Only 1 jumpy bit though with the rest being more Tension related than out-and-out shocks.

Worth a watch if you're at a loose end.

I was surprised how empty the cinema was though considering the National TV Advertising campaign for it - and I went to the megaplex theatre in Crawley for the (main evening) 9pm showing. Only about a dozen people in for it.

So you don't feel cheated out of your 7 quid and it's worth a watch then?

Well lets just say that there have been many times when I've paid MORE and been served-up LESS.

Yeah - worth a watch - but don't recommend it too heartily to your mates.

saw it, wasnt as impressed as I thought I would be as the creatures turned out to be obvious once they started talking and not much in the way of spaceships and stuff, it could almost be forgiven if it were just a large underground complex with a mutated creature...

I want a proper sci-fi with spaceships blowing up and stuff....

It was distinctly average IMO. Nice twist as you realise what 'Pandorum' has caused, but utterly crap ending.
