I think there is a big difference between 'best' film and 'favourite' film.

The two lists I posted are most of my favourites of the past 35+ years of me watching films, I'm not suggesting that they're all the best that cinema has to offer, like I alluded to earlier I'm not a 'film snob', but I'll watch pretty much anything once, if I enjoy it I'll watch it again.

Take 12 years a slave for example, I thought it was brilliant, but it's not one of my favourite films and I'll probably never watch it again because it's not an entertaining film, for me.

Another example is the poster who put Lego Batman in his top 5, now we all know the original Lego Movie is far superior to the Lego Batman movie, but if Batman is their favourite then that's fine wink

I snipped your post a bit, but only to try get my point across.
And it's a perfectly valid point smile

As I said, my list of favourites changes. I'm also not a film snob, and I don't claim any of my favourites are 'best'. For instance, I hate everything Woody Allen has ever done, and yet his films are often in 'best' lists.

However, I do like something which doesn't follow the path of least resistance (more action, fking super-heroes or dystopian sci-fi), which is probably why my list changes.

I have seen many films many times, and they are enjoyable, but as I said, they wouldn't make it onto my desert island, because I'd want something 'meatier', or with more longevity.

I genuinely hate Fight Club. And Bladerunner. I like I Am Legend, and Welcome To Collinwood but today, this week, my favourites list contains other stuff.

I'm not, for a moment, denigrating the choices of others (but aren't a lot of these lists adolescent in content? wink ), and your point about Lego Batman is a good one. I wasn't trying to suggest that my list is better than anyone else's (even though I appear to have done just that, again smile ), but to explain why, whilst I enjoy many of the films listed, none of them make my "top 5".

I claimed not to be a film snob, but I fear I'm coming across as a film pseud. So I'll stop.

I wouldn't like to give a list of top five as there are some many possibles.

But for a very long time I would have rated Se7en at the top. Saw it on initial release in Leicester Square assuming it was some sort of normal detective story and having gone in completely cold it made a big impression.

Still think it's a fantastic piece of work though not the sort of thing I'd watch more than every few years.

The other one that left a lasting impression was From Dusk till Dawn, again mostly from going in cold, thinking it was some sort of crime/road film then it all went sideways. If you aren't expecting it the shift is a bit of a shock!

Not half as much of a shock you get when your entirely respectable, straight laced mother tells you she really liked it! yikeshehe

-Treasure Of The Sierra Madre

with honourable mentions for:

-2001: Space Odyssey
-Eyes Wide Shut
-Apocalypse Now
-Heat
-Casino
-The Living Daylights (best all-rounder of a modern Bond film, IMHO)
-Hell Drivers
-Out Of Sight
-Silence Of The Lambs
-Something Wild (1987)

Not a great film imho, but interesting in hindsight, because made in the mid 80s, Bond is working with Islamic jihaddis against the Soviet army. Of course at the time, exactly where Thatcher had positioned us, siding with those poor unfortunate Islamic extremists in their battle against the evil red empire. Looking back of course, we were on the wrong side, and would have been better advised to help the red army wipe the scumbags off the face of the planet.

I'm not sure we've apologised yet!

No risk of either status in your last paragraph for the reason in your first . Woody Allen films are a joy - at least when he is on form . Don;t ask about when he isn't , it gets ugly
