Discussion
Well, wife and I have discussed the film a number of times today, such is its impact.
We have, however, both agreed on one thing that irked us.
We don't need the flashbacks without the woman in the scenes, it was clear enough from her reaction when he was sitting on the sofa what was going on - in this film it was mildly insulting that it was thought that we'd need help. Some others treat you like a moron, Vanilla Sky for example. Anyway, a minor irritant in an otherwise superb film.

The YouTube comments I've seen would have me disagreeing, it seems it was indeed too subtle for some. We have, however, both agreed on one thing that irked us.

Just watched a vid, which touches on a theory I hadn't heard.

I was thinking its all a dream after a certain bit or from the start and he never made it out of the kiddy hospital he was in which means it could tie in with a future Batman
As for the flashbacks, you got to remember that the Americans need recaps after a tv advert on the programme so theyd never have got it

Todd and Joaquin chat a few things about the film. THe interviewer had some good questions, and Joaquin is a kidder.

Looking forward to this, dunno if I'll catch it at the cinema, maybe at home in the near future.
With the graphic violence, is it the sort of that goes beyond what's been portrayed in DC films, but seen in other types of film?
Wondering if there's an element of die-hard fans not being happy plus a bit of behavioural contagion on the go what with people on both sides of the Atlantic walking out of the cinema?
If you can, it’s cinema worthy. It’s not that graphic at all - one scene yes, otherwise no. It’s certainly not as bad as other DC based films by far. With the graphic violence, is it the sort of that goes beyond what's been portrayed in DC films, but seen in other types of film?

Guardian describe it as the most disappointing film of the year, and didn't get a good review from the New York Times or a few other sources.

If the Guardian hates it then it might be a decent watch. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/oct/03/joker...
As others have said after End Game I vowed not to see another comic book based movie but this has piqued my interest enough that we're off to see it this evening.

I thought this at first hand glance as well, and then I watched a few more vids, and heard the director speak, and did some thinking. And I believe the above is not the case. I think the director has put some pretty wicked thought into this. There are arguments to be advanced that possibly, rather a lot of the film is fantasy, or in the head of Arthur. The blatant signposts for the girlfriend scenes, are not for us, they're for Arthur, when he realises he hasn't been communicating with her. We don't get those signposts for other fantasy scenes. But when he runs to his girlfriends flat, and she confronts him, it destroys his narrative, perhaps showing how bad his psychosis is.the pitchmeeting boys chat about the possible fantasy elements.

this touched on a possible Batman film by Darren Aronofsky similar to Joker, in production, around 15 years ago

Just got back, I was expecting it to be darker than it was, I sort of found it quite uplifiting, sure, it was very gritty but it was quite karmic, in sometimes quite gory ways.
It had a very 70s New York Vibe, put me in Mind of Midnight Cowboy and the Warriors in places.
One of those rare films that does live up to the hype around it, Joaquin Phoenix was pretty amazing but I cant get past Heath Ledgers Joker, think was expecting how good Phoenix was but as I shuffled into the cinema back in 2009 after escaping a boring IT course early and a bloody Batman film was all that was due in the next two hours, I just wasnt prepared for the Dark Knight and it utterly blew me away.
But, pretty solid film all round, destined to become a classic.

The scene at the end - was that soon after the bit before, or was it some 15 years later when the batman had caught him?
Either way works, my son (16) and I disagree!
Not the same "timeline" as the Dark Knight trilogy. Either way works, my son (16) and I disagree!
In another universe, this would be in the soundtrack.
I have no connection with the band other than being given a cd by a colleague a few months ago.
Released in 2007.

Stunning performance from Phoenix
Beautiful cinematography and set dressing throughout
Many brilliant soundtrack choices, including the Sinatra on the end credits
However it wasn't film of the year for me, I felt it dragged a little here and there, could have done with a better editor.
But very very enjoyable all the same, very glad I went to see it.

I looked at my watch a couple of times...
How unreliable is he? It bothered me that he fired 8 shots from his 6 shot revolver; but it is possible, I suppose, those shootings never actually happened.
I think the edit and the score did a very good job of creating a sense of being disturbed.

But him loading Kenny's (?) Gun was all a dream as well as during him getting fired, the boss said joker asked Kenny to buy a .38 from him a few weeks ago.
So either Kenny (the one who died) lied to the boss or it was a twist on reality in that he was liked by the other clowns in his mind
