Errr.....it is targeted for 10-15 year olds.
Don't be ridiculous. Of course it isn't and you know it.

Edit: The BBC state that the target audience of Radio 1 is 15-29

29?! Twenty fking nine? Jesus H Titty-fking Christ. And the argument is "Newsbeat isn't too stoopid for its listeners"? What species of twenty nine year old listens to news reports that start: "Yesterday, that's like before you last went to sleep, a policeman, or "Rozzer" as locals here call them, said they were looking for a bad man who'd done a really bad thing to someone, or the "victim" to use official police slang. If you're affected by this story or just want to rack up a phone bill with no concept of cost, call our helpline to talk to that smug Irish doctor we keep on the books"

No, the argument is that newsbeat is "too stoopid for its listeners".
Or possibly, listeners who feel Newsbeat is too thick for them would be better-served listening to something else more intelligent for their news, instead of using it as a rod to beat a station clearly not aimed at them.
1. I live in the West of Scotland. There isn't a huge choice of Radio stations (with a decent signal) in this part of the world, and Radio 1 is the only station which plays (some) music to my tastes.

2. I don't 'get my news' from Radio 1 for the reasons given already, but I do believe I am part of their 'target audience'.

I don't understand your point.
It's probably something to do with realising that things might not necessarily provide exactly what you're looking for.

If Newsbeat was too stupid for its listeners, the listeners would switch off. The ones that do still listen will either think it's ok, or not bad enough that they'll stop listening to avoid it.

Only you know which of those you are.

As a slight aside, why do you think you're part of their target audience? Just by age?

It does sound a little like you don't really like it, or even much of the music they play - but you listen because you can't really get anything else. That can't be conducive to relaxed listening.

Your grammar and spelling in your post suggests you aren’t an idiot but the content suggests otherwise - I really can’t see why you are having such trouble with this.

Where I live (in the West Coast of Scotland) there is a very limited choice of radio stations. Radios 1, 2, 3 & 4 and Radio Scotland. That’s it.

Out of those, Radio 1 is my preference. In fact, I probably like 60-70% of the music they play (which is probably quite a high percentage in relative terms. Radio 2 plays such a diverse range of music, from such a wide range of decades, I doubt many people genuinely like any more than 50% of the music played, despite the fact that they tend to play inoffensive ‘easy listening’ tracks from each genre/decade).

I also quite like most of the regular DJ’s of Radio 1.

The one aspect of Radio 1 that I don’t like however, is Newsbeat, as I believe it has been targeted for their listener with the lowest IQ, which I believe is a mistake. I believe they should be aiming for the mid-ground, 50th percentile listener, however as the bulletins are quite short I can ignore it or turn the radio off if it really bothers me. I get my ‘current affairs’ information elsewhere (such as Soovy’s regurgitation of the Daily Mail here on PH for example.)

hehe

I think I'd agree pretty much completely with this and also the rest of your post too. Apart from the Scotland bit as I'm 'darn sarf'. smile

I'm also not a great fan of phone-ins or prank calls. So I just press the 'source' button and it goes to whatever CD I have in at the time. It's not exactly hard.

I also agree with you, and with Jon's agreement.

I don't have any trouble with your comments, other than the usual one of people complaining about listening to something they don't like listening to. Rather than simply not listening to it.

But it seems that's exactly what you are doing - the not listening to it part, and getting your current affairs elsewhere.

So there we go, we do agree after all.

Except you're saying that while you turn Newsbeat off, the people who do choose to listen to it shouldn't be subjected to its inferior qualities.

FWIW, I don't like it either, and turn off when it comes on. It would just never occur to me to complain that my dislike means there's something wrong with it.

I don't really get on with the tone of Channel 4 news either, but I'm sure many people do.

Anyway, not to worry.
