Was there a bit with a collapsing bridge in that film, or am I thinking of something else?
There was.

Pretty eerie scene.
Odd that. I remember that being an excellent film, and yet until this moment I had completely forgotten it existed

Me too!

I thought it was going to be st, what with Richard Gere the main character and all.

But it was an excellent film. Atmosphere, good supporting cast, perfect accompanying score and left a shiver.

Might dust off an old copy.

The most frightening film is not a horror film but for me is a science fiction film

Alien.

It came out just after Star Wars and Grease and other feel good films in the 1970's. Even the cinema trailer was the scariest trailer of all time, watch this full screen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojhGdRSkiUw

imagine being in 1979 and seeing that.

When the film came out you had multiple scary factors.

1. Remote inhuman habitats.
2. An alien that got more terrifying as time went on.
3. Darkness forever creeping in.
4. Claustrophobia as people went down little shafts whilst doors were locked behind them.

All these slasher or torture porn don't really do anything compared to Alien.

PS For something not frightening but teeth gritting download this clip

Probably not so much frightening but disturbing, "Jacobs Ladder".

If you've not seen it, watch it! Superb.

good call, forgot that one.

Flatliners - not that scary but quite a different story on how things from the past can haunt you which had an air of possibility about it, a Jonny with the hocky stick spooked me at the time

Get a copy of Wolf Creek.

An effective interpretation of the slasher genre, in my own humble opinion.
