The Diary of a CEO has to be one of the cringest popular podcasts. No idea why it's so popular in the charts.

I generally avoid anything that has Steven Bartlett in it and he's been proven to be a fraud but I've listened to a few when he's had an interesting guest and they're all just a massive wkfest over himself and his "achievements".

I strongly dislike the guy too. Listened to one of his podcasts a few months ago and binned it off. I have actually started listening to some lately though if the guest piques my interest. Ive enjoyed them tbf. He does like to lay on how he was multi millionaire, range rover sport, 8 figure exit bla bla bla. Give it a rest mate.

The adverts on BBC podcasts are doing my head in. I don't object to a few adverts, I've even found some interesting podcasts to listen to though adverts on other podcasts, but every single podcast I've listened to recently seems to have a couple of minutes advert for the "Believe in Magic" podcast.
I put r2 or r1 on for a laugh as i scan thru channels or line up another podcast seems to me 9 out of 10 times chatting or advertising for other bbc shows

Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance, but I could just not abide by Dan Carlin's bombastic American style in Hardcore History.

I agree on first impressions it’s very ‘American’. But I don’t find Dan himself particularly ‘American’ in the detail of his writing. He’s thoughtful and considered and IMO very impressively knowledgeable.

I’m hundreds of hours in now and I’ve really grown to like his stuff.

Same. It was like every sentence was a crescendo. I tend to avoid American podcasts as the speakers are a little like performers. Worse when they have two of them clearly reading a script.

In the true crime genre, They Walk among Us and Casefile have perfect yet a little different presenters. Casefile is just a voice reading. Lovely. The presenter on They Walk among Us has impeccable timing when it comes to dramatic pauses without show boating.

Strictly speaking something like Dan Carlin should have me reaching for the off button but I quite enjoy him, It's well researched and structured with the more enthusiastic passages of his storytelling both fitting the narrative and feeling very authentic.

I've enjoyed some of the Gangster BBC podcasts.
In a similar vein, I enjoyed "Up Against the Mob".

It's about state prosection of the mafia, mostly 90's and 00's.

There's input from prosecutors, defnese attorneys and cooperators.

Thanks for this - I've just listened to the first few - Long episodes, but excellent (as a big Sopranos fan). Will be ideal for the commute then!

A short history of. Very easy listening of historical events. I've recommended to a few people and they are all burning through the episodes.

Necronomipod. A true crime podcast, but very much NSFW err incredibly vulgar and offensive. It's brilliant! I recommend listening to Ed Gein from 2022.

Making money. Only a few episodes so far but great for learning the realistic options out there if you want to earn more from your savings.

Sports strangest crimes on BBC sounds. It was okay, it was about spy gate in the 2007 F1 season. I don't think it needed someone to explain the basics of F1 also maybe was dragged out a bit too much.

Just another vote for this. An excellent podcast told by the people involved. Thanks for the recommendation.

Dumb Dumbs and Dragons

Four improv people play not so serious D&D with guest comedians.

Not for everyone, but if it's your thing, it'll really be your thing. I've done 35hrs in the past week or so biggrin (lots of travelling!)

Works at 1.25 speed and the first episode is them settling in, so it builds from there.

Yeah it took me a while to get over his way of speaking, but once I get through the first 20 mins I tend to be happily on board for the next 400. laugh

His WWI one was truly epic and his Celtic Holocaust is a great afternoon snack.

I also enjoyed The History of Rome, which started as a guy talking into his macbook to try making a "pod cast" as a side project and ended up taking over his life for years.

So many parallels in the rise and fall of an empire with later history. Triumph, tragedy, genocide, great and terrible rulers. It's great stuff.

I couldn't get on with his style and voice. Have got into 'The Rest Is History' over the past 6 months, so maybe should give Dan Carlin another go.

The Jonathan Pie series on BBC Sounds is great.

First show on BBC sounds that I've enjoyed this much for quite a long time.

Sweary and counterpointing Pie taking on the role of a radio talk show host smile
