Also, how do they keep the food hot / cold when filming in the studio? It started to make my teeth itch when I see a contestant doing something like an ice cream, and then they go last to present to John / Gregg. Is the food just sat there under lights / in a fridge? or do they stagger the timings of presenting the food? I can't see that being the case either as the kitchen behind them is quiet and other contestants stood around watching.
Apparently the regular stuff presented to John & Greg is all cooked at the same time but with rearranging things for filming by the time it's tasted it's all lukewarm at best. It also helps the appearance on camera - you never see steam rising off it, and most food promo photography you see will also be cold. They just take that into account when tasting. When they're serving the four critics they stagger the starting times so they go in turn.
Industry secrets people!!
Does anyone else share my intense annoyance with this programme?
I don't mind 'cookery' programmes where someone shows us how to make something tasty (or even something truly revolting), but 'competitive cooking' shows just seem utterly pointless to me.
You don't get a chance to try the 'food' (in quotes as most of the time it seems to be abstract art with ingredients rather than something one would eat!) and have to take the rather annoying host/judge's opinion that something is good or bad.
My wife loves this, so it's on nearly all the time, but it (and the breathy woman who does the voiceovers) has driven me to the point where I can't even bear to be in the room when it's on...
And why does it need to be on X times a week (Seems like every day, but I suspect it's a LITTLE less)? Surely once a week is enough?
Maybe it's JUST me...

I enjoy it, but I like cooking.
I prefer it when they are in the kitchen cooking their own creations rather than cheffing for some super star we've never heard of.
It's great to see them progress from simple food at the start of the show to more complex dishes producing something we can try at home .

Yes, the cameras would freak me out now I think about it ..
Am sure I'd be a quivering wreck in the kitchen having said that, have been in front of the cameras a couple of times, only being interviewed mind and, always thought I could have come across better afterwards. No mention of custard ravioli? Without custard. That made the episode for me and the way he served it 3 in the corner of a massive plate there was no way the grocer was licking the plate clean there!
I won't be happy if that annoying American makes another stir fry in the quarter final.
