Edited to add.....it did take him 7 years!
^^ that video is legendary in my eyes, it's up there with the sock story at LeMans, it's a must watch/read.https://youtu.be/mBFjHjm0O5M

Its always possible to pick holes in the details of this type of program but for me it was a great piece of Sunday evening TV in a sea of dross
Simply This ^^^^^ Well done Ch4 and Guy , keeping me thoroughly entertained for nearly90 min. It turns out that you can please some of the people , some of the time.

Not a bad watch.
Interesting that they were running normal road tyres rather than a proper performance tyre and they didn’t seem to spend much time on setup, which showed up in the brake bias issue.
I reckon they’ve deliberately left some time in it so they can go back if and when someone goes quicker.
I thought this through the programme, however concluded that the attempt was more in the spirit of a good TV programme, than an out and out record attempt.Interesting that they were running normal road tyres rather than a proper performance tyre and they didn’t seem to spend much time on setup, which showed up in the brake bias issue.

There is huge amounts of pace to be found in the van through suspension travel, brakes, and tyres, than winding up the power. The latter, however, is more within the understanding of the general public, and the obvious need for an LSD at the first lap of Cadwell wouldn't mean a lot to most people.
I reckon that there is a sub-10 minute lap in a boost-increased transit with the factory engine, in the standard position, if a BTCC corner were bolted onto a suitably modded chassis. The relocation of the motor was mainly for the TV show, and then to pull the van out for crowd pleasing smokey displays at the likes of Goodwood.
Enjoyed the program, like I do all Guy Martin stuff. But why turn up to Bonneville and not have the correct type of wheels required for getting optimum traction on the salt. I know it makes for good drama, but if they had gone there prepared he might have bagged the speed record there and then. The result was they probably compromised the setup of the van in their attempt to get both records at the ring.
Then Guy explains the loss of performance from having a passenger on the lap record at the ring was more than made up for knowledge he has of the ring, so why bother practising driving the track every day on a simulator, and paying attention when they had a look round the track before the attempt. 70+ kg is a lot of weight to carry in a vehicle that is already quite heavy.
It made me smile a bit when Guy also went on about it being a proper job and no messing about with checking everything on the van prior to the run, only to have an oil line fail and spray the outside of the engine that started the fire.

5 miles at Bonneville was too much anyway, as he said earlier Brundle recorded 176mph on Silverstone's Hangar Straight. He could have gone to Bruntingthorpe or Elvington.
I like the original Ford Supervan which was a Mk1 Transit merged with a GT40 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg6WdboK1nY
Jjust ignore the usual cameraman hanging off the side as it drives slowly with overdubbed sound effects bit. We have indicator left on (check), lovely sound (check) and lifting of the front wheel (check)

That was ‘lucky’ those custom brake pads appeared. What’s the chances. They repeated it over and over, so really lucky, and definitely not inserted drama.
Whoever made those first brake discs wanted shooting, taking the groove right to the edge of the disc.FourWheelDrift said:

What is the source for this speed record? It sounds pretty high to me.
Seeing as guy with 700ish bhp could only crack 160something after miles.
I have been on track at Silverstone in a 750bhp Nissan GTR and we were doing 168 at the end of Hangar straight so would be amazed at something transit shaped out doing that by a fair bit

It was only 70% Transit sized though. It sounds pretty high to me.

I think they knew they would have that record in the bag quite easily. Bit like when someone spots
a catagory at bonneville and beats the previous record by doing 60mph.
Lots of pretend bits to add to the drama otherwise it would all have seemed matter of fact and dull.
Odd scheduling as they normally put it on a f1 day.

Man in heavily modified 700bhp mid engined van beats record set by man in 150bhp diesel rental van.
Shocking.
who's going to tip off the DVLA that Guys running round in an illegal van? ;-)Shocking.
(Cut chassis, non original engine, transmission and rear suspension, nowhere near enough points to keep the original reg surely??)

Why don’t ford just rock up in this an annihilate the record? I’m sure one of the supervans will be sitting in a museum/collection somewhere and could be made ‘Green Hell’ compatible without much effort?

Don't think it gets out much.
It's also got a F3000 engine I believe, significantly less powerful than its original lump.

I don't think it will ever go on a public road again...(Cut chassis, non original engine, transmission and rear suspension, nowhere near enough points to keep the original reg surely??)
It doesn't have any tax or MOT and hasn't since it was trashed in 2015. Really the paperwork needs to catch up and the plate go in the bin.
