Try and imagine they were released fresh today at the same time and with no badges. The Jag is a much better balanced design. Can't look past the slab sides of the Roma (only worse on the 612) and the odd imbalance between the front and rear overhangs.greenarrow said:
Interesting that Harry was able to test a RWD Huracan at the start of the year on his local roads which presumably wasn't on winter tyres either (i cant honestly remember). The Roma seemed spikier than the Huracan in similar conditions. I guess turbo torque vs n/a linear power delivery is key here......
Exactly. I loved that Huracan. It's great when you drive a car that's way better than you expect it to be. The Roma was, unfortunately, the other way round. What's different with the Roma compared to 488/F8 is the new 8-speed gearbox allows Ferrari to allow more torque to be transmitted to the rear wheels in the lower gears. Combine that with less weight over the Roma's drive wheels thanks to it being front-mid engined, rather than rear mid-engined and you get the drive wheels spinning up much more regularly.
The one moment that shocked me (but doesn't seem to be picked up by viewers) was when the Roma span up at circa 110mph near the end of the Goodwood start-finish straight. You see the speedo suddenly jump from 110mph to 118mph in an instant, as the rear wheels lose their grip and I suddenly lift to stop us going out of shape. That's in a straight line with already loaded wheels! There's the tiniest of bumps at that point on the track but I've never had any car do that to me there before I drove the Roma, hence my surprise face..

So you've got to ask yourself, "What sort of buyer is this car aimed at". Its one thing the hardcore 812 being lairy in anything but dry conditions, as you sort of expect it, but the Roma presumably is supposed to be a more relaxed country crossing carriage. If the damned thing is trying to step out and kill you every time you feather the throttle at speed on wet roads, its not really fit for purpose as a continent crossing express.greenarrow said:

I am imagining it, but perhaps not in the way you meant...Great review of the GR Yaris Harry and possibly the most positive review you've done of any car I can think of in recent memory, as you struggled to find anything wrong with it! It did look mighty along your favourite road, particularly through that corkscrew corner where it looked faster than anything else I can recall.
A good point with the Yaris I feel is that we often talk about older cars that did things better than their successors, but this one really is a better all round package than the hallowed Subarus and EVOs of old. Its got all their rally bred on road ability, but without the silly short servicing intervals, MPG in the teens when pushing on and OTT wings and spoilers. Close to the perfect performance car for all weather use?

Yes, agree with your comments. It seems journalists across the board have praised it, however Harry is not one for hype and seems to tell it how it is and he is very positive about it. You have to respect Toyota for what they have done. I do think they have maybe lost some of the audience by not making the configuration more bespoke. Also interesting how Harry recommended the suspension mod rather than the engine tweak. As a lover of all things hot hatch, I probably need to own one of these soon..

Great video Harry, lovely to see something that hits the mark so well.
A question re models - is the Circuit Pack definitely the one to choose? Is the option of 4WD with Front & Rear Torsen Limited Slip Differentials & Circuit tuned suspension the critical box to tick? Was the Lichfield example based on this model?

There's a huge thread on the GR. A question re models - is the Circuit Pack definitely the one to choose? Is the option of 4WD with Front & Rear Torsen Limited Slip Differentials & Circuit tuned suspension the critical box to tick? Was the Lichfield example based on this model?
Suffice to say, the oddities regarding available specs means I think you're always going to feel a little compromised.
I'd love a convenience pack with the torsen duffs and without the suspension. Perhaps the lighter wheels.
Great video
Also given the volumes 25,000 per year being made this is good news. So often great cars are restricted in numbers meaning speculators buy them up never use them whilst those who want to actually use it for the reason it’s built cannot, this time though good news.
How would this compare against the Renault Megan’s R.S. trophy-R? Apart from the RS being £££. unobtainable by most road users.

Apart from the bad driving position and crashy suspension which was forgiven for some reason, as it has been by most journos. Like everyone, I was really interested in the GRY but I want to sit low IN a sporty car, not ON it. Hugely disappointing given how bespoke many elements of the car seem to be. Getting aftermarket seat rails and suspension mods will surely invalidate your 5 year warranty so that's not really an option either. Yours,
A grumpy tall bloke

According to these guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4RwkeqyUvs a Civic Type R is better so you would imagine the Megane would be better still. It isn't the Circuit Pack car in the comparison.
I also think the Yaris is a very UK car with our often wet, narrow and poorly surfaced roads making 4wd a much bigger factor than it is for lots of other places.
