Good films I watched this weekend (Vol 2)
Discussion
Spartan
Written and directed by David (Glengarry Glen Ross) Mamet. A slick spy thriller starring Val Kilmer as a shadowy government employee hired to find the kidnapped daughter of a potential presidential candidate. Kilmer handles the role of ruthless Special Service agent Scott with a chilling determination which makes the watcher readily understand that Scott will do anything,ANYTHING, to get the girl back. Aided by Mamet's attention to wordplay (Untouchables -Isn't that just like a wop? Brings a knife to a gun fight.) the film hums along nicely while Kilmer dodges bullets and the double-cross.
7/10
Batman - The Dark Night Rises
No real superheroes or invaders from another galaxy means the director/writers have to bother with a plot and although it's a little patchy at times it's actually quite good fun. Bane, the primary villain of the piece, wears a mask throughout so you never see his face but you hear his voice which strangely varies between classically educated sophisticate/bonkers psychopath with talent for cheesy one-liners "Now's not the time for fear - that comes later" and "the shadows betray you, because they belong to me!" Yup, it's Stilton central. No real surprises here, it's all standard Batperson fare but it never drags.

Ted - Very good, some right LOL moments, really enjoyed it - totally surprised me as I was expecting this to be a Kiddies movie, good job my 6 yr wasn't with me when I put it on!
The Dark Knight Rises - Excellent, not as good as TDK, but awesome end to the trilogy. Bane is very good, very intimidating (I say this because I saw Warrior a few days before, see below) - the first fight scene with Batman was ace.
Warrior - Awesome, Tom Hardy is epic and frighting - I mean you just wouldn't want to get in the cage with him, would you?
The Watch - Not bad, funny in parts but no really LOL moments. Worth a watch if you like Stiller/Vaughn.

yeah I enjoyed it too, had soem quite low marks here and it was an episode of Family Guy, but none the worse for that....had me chuckling all the way through and any time spent watching Mila is time well spent ![cloud9](/inc/images/cloud9.gif)
But whilst I'm here I'll repeat...Sightseers...totally top class British obsevational comedy mixed with gruesome edgy darkness...

Taking of pelham 123. 7/10
Good film kept me entertained and hooked throughout. Good cast , Denzel was as good as ever and liked Travolta in that role.
It was ok, but the original was better. The rundown, crime ridden NY of the 70s, along with the classic 'hang dog' demeanour of Walter Matthau. Plus that brilliant soundtrack. Good film kept me entertained and hooked throughout. Good cast , Denzel was as good as ever and liked Travolta in that role.

Tangled.
I'm a bit of a closet Disney fan anyway but this one is bloody brilliant. I challenge anyone to watch it and not to sit there grinning like a fool at the end. Scores well on IMDB too considering it's a Disney movie. I'd give it a good 9/10!

Presumably your username describes you IRL i.e. a young effeminate homosexual? (that isn't an insult- it's a genuine question?)
There are a number of reasons that I find your 9/10 rating obscene:
1)It is a childs cartoon
2)It is a romance/ love story. Prince and princess fall in love etc etc etc.
It turns out that once I started typing that 'number of reasons' was just 2.
But anyway, it is nothing beyond a romantic cartoon. Yes, it is done as well as other disney things and I agree that it was entirely watchable with children but to rate it alongside proper, credible genuine 9/10 films like Pulp Fiction/Casion (just to pluck a couple) is...well...ridiculous.
Accepted, it is just opinion but mine is deifnitely correct and yours is wrong. Its a 5/10 which is the maximum that a disney cartoon can score for a grown man, and that is being very generous

Sadly not. Twink is actually the name of our cat and I had no idea what else it meant until someone else (might have been you actually ages ago) pointed it out on here.
Yes it's a childrens cartoon, that doesn't mean it can't be brilliant. I'd also rate Pulp Fiction, which is another real favourite and (seen as we're on the same page) the original (not the remake, was pants in comparison) Taking of Pelham 123 as 9/10 movies but for completely different reasons because they are enjoyed in different ways.
This may not help the situation but I saw the trailer for Magic Mike ages ago and thought it looked like a bit of a laugh.

Sorry I don't agree with your correct opinion!
Fair enough. We can't all have a correct opinion.
Out of interest, why did you name your cat after a small homosexual?
Anyway re: cartoons- surely you would agree that a Disney cartoon is such frivolous entertainment that it cannot possibly be comparable to a 'proper' film?
Aren't you just getting a bit carried away with the suprise at how entertaining cartoons can still be?
I don't know.
Out of curiosity- do you think that Tangled was superior to other recent cartoon offerings like Despicable Me or Up?

Because I didn't know my cat was named after a small homosexual. She wouldn't respond to anything else so we stayed with Twink.Out of interest, why did you name your cat after a small homosexual?

Not really, I can see what you mean though. If you can 'ignore' the fact you'll probably know how it's going to end I still find them highly entertaining. I've probably seen Shrek 10 times but I still love it. Tangled I'd put in line with Up. That was brilliant but was a completely different movie from Tangled. Same as Toy Story 3. Great, but not in the same way. Never seen Despicable Me - worth a watch?
I don't think it's getting carried away, I've seen some cartoons that were utterly pants. Never liked things like Ice Age and when I went to see The Lorax I was bored out of my mind after 20 minutes.

.
Ignoring the cartoon element, I still didn't particularly enjoy tangled. It was just a list of romantic cliches pushed together with some mild humour. Watchable but not anything like Up for me. Despicable Me is the best of the recent bunch for me. They have definitely cottoned on to the fact that if they make an effort to put a few adult gags in there then everyone wins. Normally I wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend a cartoon but if you like them I would definitely recommend that one. (I liked all the TOy Story ones too FWIW) .
