So we sack Lineker and want to replace him with someone cheaper but with similar skills and personal experience to call upon.

So we're looking for an ex player who hasn't gone to seed and has a huge pot belly and looks a mess, as we need to appeal to female viewers, is intelligent, is well spoken / articulate, has played for their country in the latter stages of World Cups, has played for big clubs like Barcelona, and is well liked in general.

Now that leaves us with........ er, ......get me Lineker on the phone.
Why does he need to be an ex player? His predecessor wasn't
Why does he need to be slim? His predecessor wasn't
Why does he need to appeal to women on looks?
Well liked in general? Prior to becoming a lead activist on the far end of a political spectrum he probably was- would Sky have stood for their presenter doing this? When a large part of the viewer-base is known to be centre right?

Lineker was brought in by the BBC, and trained up by them. Not anything near irreplaceable.

I don't really care about salaries and what people get paid, however I'm astounded Steve Wright is still up there.
Agreed. Perhaps if we had a whip round we could raise enough to persuade him to retire.

Surely the important is issue is how much the BBC pays compared with other broadcasters?

Doesn't matter if he's an ex-player. Not many sports hosts are.

Doesn't matter if he's gone to seed.

Doesn't matter if he was any good at football - that's what Shearer is there for.
That's your opinion, others disagree. The people making the programme disagree. And despite the pressure from Sky & BT, MOTD remains the go to footy highlights programme for millions of viewers. So whatever the makers are doing, it seems to be working.

Lineker is an elite worldwide football star who is camera-friendly and can speak or present well on TV / YT / radio and has credibility with other global elite players and managers. He resonates with young and old fans, rich and poor, Brits and foreigners (for BBC World).

There is not a single other British player of working age today who ticks all those boxes for BBC UK and BBC World. Shearer is largely unknown outside the UK, Ferdinand is a bit slow, Gazza is the walking dead, Rooney is ugly, and so on...

Like it or not, Lineker is the best of the (bad) bunch.

Would be interesting therefore to see if the viewing figures fall when say Gaby Logan presents MOTD on a Saturday night because Lineker is doing the SPOTY the following night or do they stay the same, because people are tuning in for the actual highlights of the football irrespective of who presents it rather than because it is presented by an ex-pro. Or again, would MOTD2 get more viewers if it was presented by Lineker rather than Mark Chapman?

Me personally, I watch MOTD to see the action, I don't think, oh Lineker is on at 10.30pm for an hour or so, I must watch him presenting a load of chatting between the highlights.

y lefty mates think the reverse of this which suggests to me that the BBC is probably fairly central, given the difficulty of filtering through our own biases.
Of course they do.Thats how they want you to think. The BBC is very much a friend to the left, thats why its the left who defend it the most. Its easy to assess over time the tilt of "news" outlets , BBC included. It does not take long to suss that the Daily Mirror is a Leftward organ, the DM the opposite , etc etc. They don't have a problem admitting such either, the BBC , who is supposed to be impartial , calims to be free and impartial , when it clearly is not , don't need to have an agenda to see it, it is (or was when I used to watch some iof it) even its own past employees state as such, Rod Liddle being a prime example.

Agree with all this.

Also, Shearer, et al, are the ex-pro pundits on the show. They dissect the details of the games, not Lineker, so I don't see why it needs an expensive ex-pro to front it.

Chapman does a perfectly good job for a fraction of the money.

Evans is fortunate his £1m a year for Top Gear hasn't been added to his fees this year. Totes deserved as he was very good and much loved on that.

In which case, just pick someone up at the job centre and pay them minimum wage. Why waste money on Gabby Logan or Mark Chapman. Lets just have a race to the bottom.

I couldn't care less how much he gets paid, I just can't stand him on TV or radio.

Never met anyone that does rate him.

Really? Because you've been banging on about it all day. I'd hate to see what happens when someone whose wallet winds you up comes along.

It's not capitalism though, thanks to the unique way the BBC is funded....

Exactly, how is a capitalism issue? If anything it is anti-capitalism for private companies to be required to compete with a public sector funded giant.

But dont the same principles of having to pay competitive salaries to get good staff still apply?

Exactly.
Supply & demand. If MOTD is failing, the Beeb would be under pressure to cut costs.
