Billy monger is such a courageous young man, his presentation was the highlight of the evening for me.

I voted for Lewis, his fifth World Championship win was head and shoulders above anything else achieved this year and deserved a second SPOTY.

I don't really get the love for cyclists considering that they're only just staying ahead of the doping regs by using TUE. Pro-cycling is drug riddled and the alarming news is that amateurs are now obtaining anabolic steroids to follow suit. I told one guy his penis would shrink and he threatened to report me to the regulator. rolleyes

I voted for Thomas, as his achievement in the Tour was way beyond expectation. He started as a support rider for Froome and stepped into his shoes when needed. Comes across as decent guy too.

it was a public vote, the BBC aren't allowed to fix such things anymore so Hamilton didn't win because not enough people voted for him. Looking at percentages or any such 'data' is really over-thinking things.
Thomas comes across as a thoroughly likeable chap whereas Chris Froome seems a little stuffy at times.

Lewis is dull as dishwater , doesn't mater how goos a driver he is or how the good his car is or isn't

If lLewis had a little more Charisma then he would have won it.

For me Thomas was the right winner this year - not just for what he achieved but also because even after winning & upon his return to the UK with all the public support he just seemed surprised by it all and came across as a normal / decent / down to earth guy - i imagine a lot will have voted for him alone because of that.

Are we really begrudging netball it’s moment in the limelight? Really chaps?!

I don’t play netball. I’ve never played netball. I’ve never watched a netball match in my life.
I caught the Eng v Aus match towards the end and as a sporting contest in the context of it being an International Games competition against Aus on Aus soil - it was a bloody brilliant bit of sport!!!

And I happily say that as a complete cricket nut who did a public jig of joy when the MasterChef got his ton.
Agreed - the achievement of the netball team deserved a win if you look at their history and the fact they finally won a major championship - all against the backdrop that they had been threatened with having all their funding, etc, pulled.

I enjoy football, like most others, but the netball result, Ireland rugby, Ryder Cup golf, etc were all far more of a team achievement compared to celebrating the fact England football surpassed their usual early exit. Don't get me wrong, England did a great job in the summer, but i'm not sure you could have them as "best team" of the year compared to other teams that have actually won things hehe

Speaking of which - the Baddiel / Skinner / Lightning Seeds / crowd interaction "3 Lions" rendition was fking cringeworthy - i can't believe that someone thought that was a good idea tbh - especially when football didn't actually "come home" hehe

I couldn’t really care less whether they are doped or not. I do a fair bit of riding and I just can’t begin to comprehend the fitness, mental strength and ability to suffer that pro cyclists have. I can’t think of any other elite sport that demands more of its competitors.

Doing it on drugs is still so far beyond the capabilities of all but the tinniest proportion of the population that even doing it doped is a phenomenal achievement.

To have a genuinely nice guy like G come through and win the Tour when he’d be written off by most as a GC contender was a great story.

Oh, and yes, I do still respect Armstrong as an athlete, despite the fact he’s a thoroughly second-rate human being.

What's worse than the BBC cynically keeping Jonathan Rea out of the vote, is that MotoGP didn't get a mention (unless I blinked and missed it).

Maybe if next year, before each GP, the riders wear skirts and throw balls through a hoop then we'll get a good 10 minutes on SPOTY?

Well there isn't a SPOTY 2019 yet, but it doesn't matter. Wrap it up and give it to Mr Stokes now.

It's just cricket though. There are only about 3 teams that are any good at it. smilewink

Double events though, world cup, the ashes. Not much competition this year. Hamilton will no doubt win another WC and be in the running. Non Olympic year. Not sure who else has done anything much spectacular this year.

I have my fingers crossed that Dina Asher Smith will become a world sprint champion next month. cloud9

I think Ben Stokes' off field antics might prevent the BBC giving him the SPOTY, irrespective on whether he deserves it or not.
