I've signed up to premium, £11.99 per month including YouTube music.

Worth every penny at this price for me. I watch more YouTube than any other service.

I was using tidal for music which is noticeably better quality, but I'll survive with YouTube music :-)

Am I the only one who thinks YouTube is a fantastic service that gives access to a vast amount of information and entertainment that otherwise wouldn’t see the light of day, and that people should just pay whatever the local price is, or, if you can’t afford it or don’t want to, JUST WATCH THE fkING ADVERTS, rather than basically stealing? The entitlement is off the scale.

Does it no longer give the option to pay annually?

I bought 12 months in June last year for 1200 Indian Rupees, which was £11.64 at the time.

The monthly option leaves you open to fluctuating exchange rates.

Hmmm should I give google 144 quid or 40 quid… that’s a real struggle

TBH if they brought out a version of YouTube premium that didn't have music bundled, and didn't have a lot of the other features except no-ads, I'd probably pay a couple of quid a month for it. Right now, I don't want to pay what they're asking as it comes with a bunch of crap I don't need.

Same for me. I've already got music elsewhere, so why be forced to something useless?

Google and YouTube creators would not agree with you, but you go ahead and fight for...?... something or someone.

Since probably 2010 or so I have gone from pirating quite a lot of content, to basically none at all for probably 5 or 6 years, to pirating more content or using a VPN to access lower prices.

When it was Netflix and Spotify that could deliver the lions share of content then fine, but now everything is so carved up. I am sure I am not the only one who has been on this trajectory.

I've ditched Spotify for YouTube music so that offsets the cost for me, to a degree.

Don't miss Spotify. What service are you using that YouTube music can't replace?

If it's vinyl, then fair do's!!

Prime, the latest upgrade does everything I need, musically.

That’s a weird one isn’t it. I used to use prime music and then they made the library tiny unless you paid more money and now it seems to be back.

Happy with YouTube music for now.

It's all to do with increasingly thin advertising margins and replacing them with subscriptions, apparently.

Still struggling to see how giving a company a false physical address for digital content which is delivered online is "basically stealing", but I guess it takes all sorts.

Ditto. I have zero interest in music and no reason to download videos.
Happy(ish) to pay maybe a fiver a month/£50 p.a. to remove adverts - as it is, I just put up with the ads and have a good grumble.

ETA. I'd probably pay a little extra to exclude specific genres from my feed; music, pop-culture, celebrity bks, etc.

I think the music things more about attracting new users to the service rather than retaining new users. Youtube knows the value of ad free to 'me' is double digits.

Netflix are offering a ad supported option now, which I think is a better idea as you can make a cup of tea etc.

I pay for YouTube however because often my viewing is usually reactive so delays really sting.

There was a trial last year of YouTube Premium Lite for $6.99. I haven't seen anything about it since then https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/2/22605455/youtube...

Yes, its fantastic. The music service is a really good bonus - I was using Amazon music but was able to drop it which paid for part of the YT premium sub.

The ability to keep the audio (from a YT video or a music stream) going in 'screen off' mode on an Android device (maybe iOS too, I don't own one) is very good too but should really be a part of the app to begin with.

I watch by far more Youtube than any other streaming service. It's literally replaced channel surfing for me.

Yet people seem to be averse to paying for it and whinge about ads. If you want something that requires a massive, expensive to run and maintain, backend service for free, be prepared to watch ads. Otherwise, pay for it.

I used Prime Music for a long time as the library was decent even if it was a subset of the full one but was eventually tempted to upgrade to full Amazon Music on a four month introductory offer. But when I got Youtube Premium the 'bonus' Youtube Music was a perfectly acceptable replacement for Amazon.

I understand they've rejigged Prime Music to give you full access to the entire Amazon Music library but don't allow you to select individual tracks, you have to accept a degree of randomness in what you get and can just spec playlists, genres, artists and maybe albums. That's probably more appealing to most people and it is 'free' if you are already paying for Prime. Not felt the need to try it out though.

The Amazon playlists/radio stations used to be pretty good too.
