Same here. In fact, I would go as far as saying out of all the series of Grand Designs it's up there with my least favourites. I preferred the tyre one from the other week - at least that was honest.

If you mean the fellow who built it all himself (a round house I think) who was an ex chippy type and made his chairs and kitchen units and stairs etc himself as well.... Then yes, I thought that was cracking.

I really, really liked the fellow who build his house in the water tower type thing all on his own (well, he had his son help at times), and he worked his socks off.

Nope the a-frame house that, from the revisited episode a couple of years later, seemed to have help the guy to immediate attracted a mate. Nesting in the truest sense - materials, function(and intent?)!

yes, that one was superb. Looked like it was 2000 years old. And the couple worked incredibly hard (and I recall the mosaic in the water feature the lady did which was sensational), making the arches etc.. And a heckuva budget IIRC.

The water tower was from the Channel 5 equivalent series, and whilst he started off doing all the work himself he wasn't getting much done at all so ended up getting a whole bunch of trades in.

No it wasn't, it was a Lutyens designed one in the grounds of one of his big houses, with the modern extensions, and Kevin was there, no question.

Interesting how these projects are being judged on the merits of the builders and their motives as much, if not more than, the quality of the end result. At a glance the converted watertower is as uncompromisingly modern as this week's project, and folk here are queueing up to slag the latter off.

It's not ringing any bells, anyone got a link?

As for the water tower one, I don't recall the fellow getting loads of people in (memory is poor these days, too old), perhaps there were a few? I am thinking of the one where the guy was cutting the metal from the bottom of the well etc.. on his own each evening.....then dragging it up etc.. Is that the same one?

The programmes are entertainment, pure and simple, and therefore the personalities are at least as important as the buildings. If they were serious they would have to be a lot longer and a great deal more searching. Kevin is honest though, which is refreshing, even if he is polite with it. It is also popularising architecture, so a far greater number of people see what modern design is about whether they like it or not, and are free to express their views.

There are also big differences between one modernist building and another. The Water Tower was early on in the programme's life, and the more people see of the minimalist stuff, the more they see it for what it is, which a photogenic but uncomfortable set of new clothes for the Emperor.

It was the joiner bloke who wanted to be entirely self sufficient in the middle of this forest he had bought, and he built it largely himself with his pals and his own wood, and with clay smoothed over hay bales for an internal wall finish, I seem to recall. The building ended up a cross between the Golden Hall of Meduseld and the Little House on the Prairie. None of this white minimalist and poncey sofa ste. I loved it.

http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-tv/grand-designs... Thats the woodsmans house in Sussex.

There's been more than one water tower I think. I think the guy you are talking about (who was a little bit mad) may not have been a Grand Design.
