Margin Call

I've seen it before but the scene where Z Quinto's character is questioned about his qualifications cropped up on a YouTube short so I grabbed a copy and watched it again. It's quite a fascinating view on how the 2008 financial crisis may have started, including a few scenes showing how the further up the chain you were, the greater chance you had of being unaffected by it all.
Thats a great scene when Simon Baker (Jared Cohen) asks "What is a 'specialty in propulsion,' exactly?"

Furiosa

Ties in perfectly with Fury Road - it doesn’t feel like a forced prequel (because it was written before/ along with Fury Road).

Full of action, well paced, not a wasted scene, and some epic set pieces as you would expect from George Miller.

As good as Fury Road, despite using more CGI. It is a film that tells a story crafted by someone who wanted to tell that story, and didn’t have to pander to studio wants.

9/10

(Fury Road, which I re-watched last night, is also a 9/10).
Did you see the same film as me?confused

I went with the lowest of expectations and even those weren’t met. Meandering plot, poorly edited (if edited at all), lame conclusion and fairly crap acting. Apart from that, it was OK, I suppose.

3 that popped up on my system this week…

Ministry of extraordinary gentlemen
Watched this with the wife and we both really enjoyed it. Stylistically, it’s obviously Guy Richie, the plot doesn’t take much following, but it’s just good fun.

Fallguy
Disappointing. Decent cast, and could see what they were trying to achieve, but just not funny.

Civilwar
Wasn’t what I expected. Thought it would be about the politics, but it’s really a road trip movie. Excellent ‘war’ scenes and a top performance from Dunst. Far less thought provoking that I’d hoped for given the current state of US politics. Still a good watch and not overly long.

Mad Max Furiosa

The spectacle! The action! Furiosa's drive for revenge!

Lovely nod towards Max's V8 Interceptor near the end.

See it at the cinema.

Did you mean The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Henry Cavill.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a very different film.
With characters like Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Dorian Grey, an invisible man, Dr. Jekyll etc,

Same for me. Switched it off halfway through as it was so boring. Not a patch on the original Mad Max films.

The original was great, not so keen on 2 the Road Warrior, 3 Beyond Thunderdome just got strange and can't bring myself to watch Fury Road.

It seems to be Furiosa weekend.

A simple revenge plot, clearly in the Mad Max style complete with narrator. Lots of dystopian wasteland action and some great lines for Chris Hemsworth as the quite likeable psychopathic baddie. A nice nod to the original.

8/10.

Civil War

I really enjoyed it. Different as it's following the journalists, not a sniper or military unit.

Beavis & Butthead Do The Universe

Bloody brilliant. Laughed my ass off. Crude and stupid. If you liked the originals in the 90s, you'll love this.
If you didn't, then best avoid.

The fly. Original

Love these old movies. Lots of screaming and fainting and posh talking. And the effects....

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Despite the ludicrous premise, a fairly watchable film with some nice nods to the original.

The Fall Guy (2024)

Emily Blunt, Ryan Gosling

I’d watch Emily in anything but this really was dull to the extent I stopped mid way through. Original far better.

Challengers (2024)

Zendaya and some others

Watched the first ten minutes based on the Times review saying it was about Tennis and then it all went a bit woke. Avoid.

Save Yourselves!

A film I recorded from Film4 back in February, and have been looking forward to watching.

fk me, it's st.
What a waste of time. Although, fortunately, it seems no talent was wasted, so that's a relief.

Sounds like the title was a warning.

The Fall Guy

I like Ryan G and I'd watch Emily Blunt if she was gardening. I knew it was going to be daft so I just hoped for some fun along the way and it delivered that. No-one would ever watch it a 2nd time but it was OK.

Civil War

The fact that this was set in America was almost incidental to the story really. It could have been Africa, the Middle East, South America, or anywhere else really. The fact that it was set in America raises questions about how it started and why, and the impact on the rest of the world, and and and... none of that was explored really which is a shame but it wasn't the story they wanted to tell.

Regardless, it was quite good, although a little slow in places.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

Used to enjoy the TV series but had somehow never got round to watching this. Decentish plot an Andy Serkis is believably menacing, but bloody hell how much stupid crap is there that detracts from the whole thing. The whole jail bit was very unrealistic, when trudging through several feet of snow wouldn't you maybe do your coat up, and when you get fished out of a lake in Norway and medivaced back to London, wouldn't they have taken your wet clothes off somewhere on route!

Cinema Paradiso

Been meaning to get round to this for about thirty years...

It's a coming of age tale which won an oscar & a milion other prizes in 1986 revolving around a developing friendship between a little boy & a cinema projectionist in the wake of WW2. It is badly dated by today's standards but that's more than compensated for by the sheer charm of the script & performances, particularly Phillipe Noiret whom I will always stop what I'm doing to watch. Top tip, avoid the director's cut which is about two days long & adds little to the story.
