The irony is that Lucas' original quote was that "special effects are no substitute for a good story" (or words to that effect).
In fairness he was, and is, correct. smile

And yet did not apply this ideology to any of the prequel films. frown

Plus we mustn't forget that A New Hope had one of the greatest pieces of film music ever.

Friend of mine had that played on the church organ for his wedding as the bride entered the church, then the organist neatly blended it in to the wedding march as she started to walk down the aisle. smile

Just found the clip sent to me, to be precise it went Wedding March (everyone looks around, normality), then changed to Star Wars (looks of surprise, then laughter) then Wedding march to the altar. It was 11 years ago.

That is so cool. I was daydreaming the other day (as per normal) about winning the euromillions. And if I did I would buy a Rolls and have it bespoke with the Imperial insignia on the décor.biggrin

To be honest the music in the prequels wasn't too shabby either I thought, probably one of the few saving graces I'd say.

The Duel of the Fates kicking in as Darth Maul lights up his double lightsaber and squares off against the two jedi was electrifying! A little heartbreaking though and it makes it all the more bitter a pill to swallow as it shows that the Star Wars magic can still enthrall, pity it was just one of a dozen such moments amongs the rest of the crapness that was the prequels.

The music in the prequels was really good.
It does indeed make t more frustrating as there was some really good scenes, especially in TPM. Just no proper structure throughout.

John Williams, the only one who came out of any association with the prequels unsullied by their crapness?

don't forget that eps 1-3 ultimately had to get to episode four in terms of story.
thereofre Lucas was beholden to that ending - in the getting there i bet he wished a new hope was episode 3 not 4 but hey-ho.

the "story" in itself is still a good one.

its the script that is the biggest let down in trying to deliver the story of anakin. some of it is really woeful and as good as jake lloyd is in ep 1, older anakin is a let down pretty much all of the time except when he turns bad...

I disagree; it's a ludicrous story with everything arse about face - a 'Trade Federation' trying to stop trade, an invasion designed to sway public support that is attempted to be kept secret, the most convoluted plot to repair a starship when it could have been sold and a transport hired, and the worst thing of all, fixated on the story of Anakin becoming Darth Vader when Vader wasn't even a central character in the original trilogy.

Would have been amusing if when being marooned on Tatooine they had gone into Mos Eisley and hired a ship from someone called Jan Solo and his sidkick Wookie Chewdaka hehe

There is a serious amount of repetition going in in the prequels as well.
All of the great lines from the first three get repeated (sometimes several times). Lucas you lazy bd! You couldn't even write new decent stuff, you just hacked out all the good stuff from the first three that others helped you with, ffs.
Chris Lee copies Vader's speech from Empire when chatting to Obi-Wan (join me), The Emperor might as well be reading the same script from Jedi for some of it.

I was trying to explain the story to a friend of mine at work the other day as she'd never seen any of them, and I realised something...

It's about as Bollywood as you can get... Just in space.
Evil father has twins that are separated to protect them... They nearly get it on but find out they are related... Evil father repents at the end and good triumphs evil.

Star wars.....Indian!

Is it just me that wonders why no Imperial spy or anyone for that matter ever send a telegram to the Emperor saying, 'Oh Mr Emperor there is a blond kid here with the last name Skywalker, staying with Vader's step brother, just thought you'd like to know'.

Without all the prequel bullst it seems the blood relationship might not have been a real one and anyway, Anakin's last name might have been different. Or maybe Skywalker was a really really common name like Smith, even so, with Owen Lars as Anakin's stepbrother no-one ever put the big frickin' flashing 2 plus 2 together?
