I must admit I'm enjoying it, even if I'm not clued-up enough to nit-pick certain historical aspects. I think it's beautifully shot, (despite the ShakyCam now and again), with an equally beautiful score, even if it is ever so slightly formulaic with a tip of the hat, (pun intended), to similar alternate realities like V For Vendetta.
As for looking too gloomy....buy a better TV. On my Pioneer Kuro, which is one of the finest TV's ever made, it looks sublime.

I was really looking forward to this interpretation of a Nazi occupied England, however, I am struggling to stay engaged. The BBC are normally very good at this type of drama but I feel they are lacking something that engages the audience.
I accept the gloom as trying to reflect the period, but am annoyed at the sound quality of the lead actor, as evidenced by all on the last Gogglebox.
It's no Man in the High Castle, I'm out.

All looks fantastic on my 4k Samsung and I've never had an issue with the audio.

My audio is stereo, played through an Arcam amp into a pair of kit built floorstanding speakers, which are ok but not top of the range audiophile stuff.
The audio is fine as far as I am concerned.

Don't have an issue with the smoking, not that old, but as a kid the smoke on top decks of buses was like a fog, and I reckon if you were having a bit of a questionable discussion with Nazis around you wouldn't be doing a Brian Blessed.
I've just watched episode two and both picture and sound seem OK to me. As most of the action takes place at night or indoors in a country occupied by an oppressive regime I wouldn't expect the lighting and camera work to be bright and cheerful; to me it seems spot on given the secret and sinister nature of the plot and characters.
The sound quality is OK too; better to my ears through my TV than my stereo system but I didn't adjust the tone controls which might have improved it. It can hear every word and as I mentioned before, my ears are 67 years old and not prefect.
I didn't expect an all-action, wham-bang production so I'm not disappointed at its treatment of Nazi occupation as dark, moody and malevolent.

Well I enjoyed tonight's episode, a bit more going on and some good scenes. Douglas seems to have developed a bit of a personality
Definitely picked up the pace this week.My wife gave up 10 minutes into episode 2, but I felt it hit its stride this week and set up a great next episode, potentially.

I must have missed a part of the story. How did Rhind-Tutt's character get caught? Was he some sort of go-between?
That's more of the intrigue isn't it. I think it was his own people who did it to make it look like the Germans. Remember he said he was being followed and they could have killed him to prevent him from telling the germans under interrogation.FourWheelDrift said:
They could have done that post death to make it look like torture.
Wounds and injuries made pre- and postmortem can be identified as the body reacts differently. So would become obvious to the pathologist etc. Though that doesn't mean that isn't how they wrote the story in this case!
I have a suspicion that the English (?) guy with the glasses who was on the phone (can't remember his name) is playing both sides & can't be trusted.

I have not seen last nights episode yet and I dont want to comment from the book because it may or may not be in the screenplay or if it is may not yet have been shown. The major criticism of Len Deightons work is that there are often questions left unanswered and there is a pattern in his books that things get to a certain point full of confusion and then all of a sudden the reveal starts coming as it hurtles towards the end.
