I imagine if you could see behind the scenes of how they designed that touchscreen system, it'd be like watching Pentagon Wars. I can't believe it could come about without some kind of ridiculously convoluted and obstructive internal quagmire at VW. If they actually tried to do their best work, and felt happy with what they put out, and it's that?
What an absolutely awful user interface.

With one bloke, at the end of the long desk, who kept suggesting a dial would work so much better and who now doesn't get invited to the meetings. What an absolutely awful user interface.

Are you taking Valium for that?
Eh? ![confused](/inc/images/confused.gif)
I’d buy an XC40 in a heartbeat over anything the premium opposition offer.
i’d be interested to know what other manufacturers were being considered when a valium is required for Volvo??
As great as the Golf R is - £40-50k it’s crazy. Go for a nearly new A45 400-420bhp beast.
Or
DB7 V12
R8 V8
997 Turbo
Naturally that lovely light blue TVR Harry had in the background of that storage unit.
M3 CSL
Ferrari 328
Master Ghibli
Harry if you do read this (love all your vids incl the farming ones too) it would be great if possible to have a video of the Maserati Ghibli you had all those years ago

Love the honesty of the screen talk Harry.
It was making my teeth itch with those bings and chimes while you were still sat on your drive way!
I'm not sure VW press office would welcome this feedback, but your review totally put me off them! I'm no dinosaur, but the implementation of that screen and tech is beyond the pale.

I've just finished watching Harry's review, and the - quite frankly - mind bending idiocy of that touch-screen interface is astonishing.
The dash on my 2007 Saab is laid out in such a way as to make changing temps / radio volume / radio channels / CD's nothing more than moving my arm in the appropriate direction, without diverting my attention from the road ahead.
Agreed. Nothing inspirational or aspirational about that car. Test was great, up to HM's usual standards, but the car? Meh. And over 40k? Mental. Still, one for the blue suited middle management lot to boast about the numbers at their summer barbecue, in their postage stamp Bovis Homes garden, with the estate agent neighbour.

The unknown as yet is what personal contract hire rates will be - it might be crazy cheap £200pcm £0 down (or not). Retail price in my eyes doesn’t make sense.
If wanting a new car or newest then RS6 / E63 S / M5 Comp / M6 Grand coupe / range Fover Velar/ RS4 all would seem more tempting in every conceivable way IMHO over the new Golf R.
If you want a Golf R buy one for low £20’s and enjoy it

RRP isn't a price but an index, an integral part of the sales mech. Why pay £200/month for a car that is at 30,000 on the index when there is one at 50,000.
As well as being an index it also serves the critical function of locking out competitor lenders. You might be able to borrow unsecured in the open market at 2% yet the vendor can render that uncompetitive compared to a junk rate 6% secured deal by declining to deal at the true price.
We really shouldn't ever consider the RRP to be an actual price but rather an index that is an integral part of financial engineering and marketing.

RRPs make perfect sense. They are the number that make the lease number look cheap and that drives people to drive the halo product, promoting the general product.

RRP >£40k though does have notable VED ramifications for years 1-5 inclusive. RRP isn't a price but an index, an integral part of the sales mech. Why pay £200/month for a car that is at 30,000 on the index when there is one at 50,000.

While I agree that Golf UI looks terrible, I think a better option would be voice control. My current BMW is very good at this and the new version is apparently a whole lot better. 'Hey BMW, my passenger is cold' - 'Would you like me to turn on their heated seat?'.
Maybe not the best example, but much easier than mashing multiple sub-menus in a touch-screen.

I thought voice control would be sensible but firstly, when I tried inputting any address into my BMW it tried to send me to places in the far north of England until I tried gutter English which it seemed to understand and secondly someone on another thread highlighted the risk that you'd wake the wife up and all hell would kick off. Maybe not the best example, but much easier than mashing multiple sub-menus in a touch-screen.
The uncomfortable truth is that for certain things like volume or heat a dial is perfection. It's instant, zero loss of concentration, precise functionality. For some things perfection was reached 100 or so years ago and we are just in a period of flux, victims to fannying about that will inevitably be resolved by the rebranding of the word 'dial' to something new and massively on trend like the iDial or Eboo or some other made up tripe.
