In this series. It's already been lit for season 2
Yes but that will probably be a year away, they have just started scouting locations for it, looking at Croatia apparently in addition to Malta and Ireland again
Fair point.

I've already bought the first book. Just holding off reading it until the end of the series. Well...trying to, anyway biggrin

I've also just bought the first book and likewise trying to hold off reading it.

Had a quick squint down the first few pages and I suspect that if I'd opened the book first I might not have watched the series as the writing style is not the sort of thing I tend to stick with.

So maybe for some it could be series first then book is the way to do it.

Personally I found the book to be quite hard to get along with until I got to the wolves. I think stopped a few times because the introduction bit seemed rather crap (with the white walkers). It all seemed a bit generic fantasy, and while the wolves didn't make it any less so, I just quite liked the concept of the characters all getting a wolf each.

Didn't start really getting into the other aspects of it until the King's visit, and all that came with it. The story really builds at an astonishing rate from that.

The books are not easy reading but they hook you in if you persevere with them. I only stuck with them on the recommendations of a friend.

If you want easy fantasy go read David Eddings, its easy reading but as a result its pretty generic fantasy. If you want an interesting read it is unfortunate that it seems to be that most of them are challenging.

I would also recommend Joe Abercrombie, his style of fantasy is very good. Its very dark and violent rather than elves and unicorns. Its not GRRM standard but its not bad either

As said above, it seemed generic fantasy written in strange English which does create atmosphere accepted.

Plus my copy is badly printed on cheap paper where the edges of the letters are not crisp, plus it uses a really hideous font.

Just caught up with this week's episode having finished off book 3 while on hols last week so the TV series is working well as a refresher BUT...

Renly as a wimpy homosexual? Really? There was onw other moment in this week's ep that was not as in the book - Arya didn't see the faces of the two conspirators in the dungeon room with the dragon skulls but they showed Varys clearly. Kinda a spoiler for the books!

I thouth book one had a few twists in it but boook three is way more twisty.

Both conspirators were blindingly obvious in that scene.

Renly is gay in the books, just theres no sex scene but several characters refer to him and Loras being gay

Top show. Loving it so far, even if it is a bit slow.

There's a big gap between apparently obvious and explicit. Maybe american audiences don;t like having to think?

As for Renly and Lorras' sexuality - it's hinted as and there are jokes in the books but they're both warriors not wimps.

True. I guess it's also a side-effect of the medium too. In a book, you don't hear the actor's voice.

Its interesting isn’t it that even in our enlightened times the entertainment industry still struggles to portray gay men as anything other than slight boyish and effeminate. While I don’t know a lot of gay men those I do seem to fit into the same physical groups as you or I except they like a bit of cock.

Still enjoying the series btw

Where is it mentioned in the books that Renly is a warrior? I must have missed that, I know he has a suit of armour but it doesnt say thats he is particulary good in combat iirc. Loras on the other hand is meant to be very good.

Without spoiling major elements of it its hard to state how obvious it is that Renly is gay in the books as its something that comes up in the second book but its blatently obvious, although at least I thought so!

More importantly guys if you order his new book at Waterstones you get a free book and a discount. Bloke is being described as the UK answer to GRR MARTIN so give it a go.

I was almost ill at the beginning biggrin

The characterisations continue to be superb. Both the (bitty) prince at the Eyrie and Joffi continue to be odious little sts.

By the way, talking of Joffi...I could have sworn Viserys said "Ka d'Argo" when he entered the feast, rather than "Khal Drogo" hehe

Who is the author, not on Waterstones website that I can see? Joe Abercrombie?
