FB (my all time favourite film) went down well, as did don't mess with the bull or you'll get the horns Breakfast Club.
WarGames was a challenge though. Not so much the actual plugging of a phone into a computer but more the fact that kids nowadays have no understanding of ICBMs and the threat of global thermo nuclear war like we did. I can't imagine that Ghost has aged well either. Dirty Dancing was also a struggle (and not just for me!).
Beyond the obvious (Shawshank, Gump, Stand By Me, Ghostbusters etc), the big hits have been Groundhog Day, Castaway, Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, Usual Suspects (with judicious skipping through parts, but as much joy watching my son's mind blown by the ending as mine was the first time) but the favourite by some margin has been Grosse Pointe Blank bizarrely. Oh and Princess Bride of course.
My son is only 11 so a few on that list will have to wait a few more years. I can't remember anything particularly nasty in T2 so I think that will be ok but correct me if my memory has failed. Terminator 1 will definitely have to wait as will Shawshank, Usual suspects, Saving Private Ryan and a few others.WarGames was a challenge though. Ant-Man and The Wasp was todays outing. It's a nice light hearted adventure with action and some humour. It all rattles along quite quickly, the characters work well, everyone's motivations and actions make sense, the action is great. There are a couple of clichés and some weak humour, but overall it's very good. 8/10
Interstellar
I'd not read any reviews, and I knew very little about it. So went in with completely fresh eyes.
Well, I really enjoyed it. It felt like 2001 for the modern generation. I was particularly heartened by the lack of sound on external shots in space - a little bugbear of mine in most sci-fi films.
The cinematography was amazing, the score was superb, and I really liked the use of practical effects over CGI. I also liked the fact it was all about the story, not about action and explosions.
I did worry when they met Matt Damon's character that it was going to go the same way as Sunshine, but fortunately it didn't.
The ending was a little too happy, I felt. And also, I thought the son was going to smash the watch rather than just embracing Murph, but overall it was really good.
Now I'm off to read some reviews.
Edit: Oh, I should add that as a confirmed geek, and also having a degree in Physics, and being a fan of Christopher Nolan's work, that I was probably predisposed to like this film. But since I knew nothing about it beforehand, this was all a pleasant surprise for me.

The (step?)father impaled through the head via his open mouth isn't especially pleasant, but nothing else springs to mind. 272BHP said:

oh yeah, forgot about that. I think he will be fine though, all the action movies these days have similar stuff don't they?Few F words, two bad stabbings, (foster dad and security guard) and that's about it.
Nothing like films and TV of today imo.

Justice league
Went int this mostly unaware of this not seen any of the origin movies.
Nearly turned it off then gal Godot turned up in some tight trousers yes I am that shallow.
Literally a remake of 3 different marvel movies
5/10 all 5 for gal.
Bad.
I didn't think it was that bad, but it potentially could've been better.Went int this mostly unaware of this not seen any of the origin movies.

Lol, maybe I have my priorities skewed but I am not too bothered about him seeing some violent stuff (within reason of course) but every time someone uses the F word I inwardly shudder when my son is watching. Only happened a couple of times as I will not watch those movies with him but they do pop up on occasions unsuspectingly.Few F words, two bad stabbings, (foster dad and security guard) and that's about it.

Im not even sure I belong to the same species she’s spectacular. It's actually on now, Gal is unreal isn't she?
American assassin. Enjoyed this, I had issues I didn’t think Keaton was well cast for that role
The usual sentimental I don’t go back for people .... oh what a surprise
I didn’t like the motivation of the bad guy, been done to death just not buying it as a reason to do what he was doing a sailor too.
But for some reason still enjoyed it.
6.5/10

I know they "shouldn't be watching it anyway" but I think gentle exposure to the violence and bad language that action movies have is the way forward. He knows it's all fake so I'm not too worried about the violence, within reason like you say.
I suspect my son's heard the language all before, we never swear in front of him, but I'm sure all the kids in school do when there are no parents and teachers about, so we check with him if he's heard words before and their meaning, he knows he's not allowed to use it and he never does afaik.
Anyway, I watched RoboCop as a kid and I turned out ok.
Well, kind of
Just watched Mama Mia 2 and was thoroughly entertained. I'm happy to say I love abba anyway so the music was great - the singing in some cases less so: Dominic Cooper hang your head in shame. Impressively they got the block playing a young pierce brosnan to be just as bad at singing as he is lol.
Anna 'big eyes' Seyfrid can hold a tune nicely as can Lilly James but then you get to hear a quality singer when Cher has a bash and that's on a totally different level
