The Big Gypsy Eviction
Discussion
I take it this was a show about the removal of the permanent site in Basildon? It's been an issue for a long, long time. When I lived in Essex the council were talking about removing it.
One thing I simply don't understand is why this was a proper brick built home type of estate, I mean, I can fully accept that if there are to be sites provided then this could have water/electricity etc so that caravans can connect up but facilities would be akin to a campsite, not permanent dwelings surely?

That's not the ending I was hoping for.
Not sure where was any sort of ending, was there? The people on the site were building their "terrorist" weapons, and the small print at the end said that they have been served their 28 days notice. I would have rather waited the 4 weeks and had a program that actually had a resolution one way or another than watch part one of something, with no expectation management of if there will be a part two.
The travelling community are getting uptight about having to travel? Hmmm...
Despite their alleged sense of family values, they seem to have no idea of how to treat others.
The kind of behaviour that is expected within a society varies considerably from area to area and country to country. Whether a visitor or a resident of that society, you have three choices, conform, move, or live in your own way without causing problems to others.
I have no problem with anyone living however they want, as long as it doesn't impact others. If you want to live in an earth mound, and train gerbils to be your underlings, do it. If it causes problems to other, you have to modify what you're doing.
The law of this land states that their camp is illegal. This is ot a law that has been made to victimise them. The law affects everyone in this country. I can't build a settlement like that. Neither can they. Since they live within the society of the UK, they must comply with all laws. I do.
If I visit another society, I conform to their rules, or accept the consequences. Chewing gum is illegal in Singapore. Either don't take it in to Singapore, or be willing to face the consequences. A far removed and different example to the issue of travellers, but the choices still remain.

How is this going to cost £9,500,000 to police? And why are people tinking in that case maybe it is not worth letting them move on.How soon before we start looking at the cost of Baby P, or the phone hacking scandal, and say, well, it's not worth it.

Good common sense post, nail on the head. The law of this land states that their camp is illegal. This is not a law that has been made to victimise them. The law affects everyone in this country. I saw some stuff on our local news about this site and their prepations to fight the other day - outrageous behaviour in a modern society, totally wrong to be building, essentially, bombs all round the place and there will be a massive incident before it all kicks off with the baliffs. They say they have had no time to prepare, find somewhere else etc - they've had about 10years of eviction notices to move their illegal pitches.
I watched the full programme last night - what a mess that dithering Council let happen through inaction on their part. If everyone wasn't so afraid of human rights, entering the sites and enforcing ALL the previous court decisions they wouldn't have this mess. As for the public who bang drums and support illegal camps - let them come and stay on your property for a few years!
I'm getting really fed up of the travellers going on about how godly and peaceful they are then the next breath they make public death threats and say how someone who has complained about them will be pulled from his car one day by a gang and "given a good slapping...etc" Unbelievable that no action is taken by the police for these public threats and 100% evidence.
Was this the site where the travellers spread into an private orchard and cut down all the trees? The lady who owned the land was then served with an tree preservation fine and order because they had been removed - madness.

If you want a real piss boiler just Google the exploits of Sam Vinden and his partner in crime, you'll have to use the Google cache version of the articles though as the original ones have been deleted. That he isn't locked away in prison is simply staggering, he's currently on bail for a double murder. Bail ffs!
