The real reason is that Sky can out bid anyone for anything, because so much of our tax money is getting recycled by being spent on sticking dishes on walls.

I don't particularly agree with the minority programming - but ITV don't have the rights either wink

£32m for s4c in 2012 according to the grauniad- more than the savings made by compromising f1 coverage- much of s4c output gets nil viewers (officially) compared to up to 7m for the f1
licence fee is just a tax to provide minority output
Shhhhh! If they ditch S4C then we'll lose Y Clwb Rygbi. Granted everything else is crap on it though.

The BBC is meant to be a public service, providing a wide range of interests, not chasing ratings.
Another black day for BBC/ BBC Sport. What is left? The Open, Wimbledon, 6 Nations, Grand National and The Derby…
What happened to Grandstand, Sportsnight, Sport on Friday, cricket, regular Horse racing, etc All gone and replaced by endless repeats of Kids eating Pets, My Wife in the Attic, etc

If the beeb was just aboot ratings they would fight to keep f1 and drop a lot of the s4c stuff.

interesting snippets
"Daily Telegraph’s Formula 1 correspondent Tom Cary said : “The simple fact is the BBC was never going to keep paying what it was paying. Something had to give. Fortunately, F1 has not left the BBC entirely. Far from it.

It has been almost overlooked amid the howls of outrage that the BBC has in fact extended its coverage for a further five years (it was due to end in 2013) until 2018. Or to put it another way, they have signed a new seven-year deal. Half the races (the best ones) are remaining on terrestrial free-to-air (which is much better than you get with football on the BBC), while the rest of the season will be covered by highlights shows. That is still get a very good service for the licence payer.”

Eric I understand your reluctance to pay for Sky, but why am I a mug for doing so?

Sky is not good value for money compared to the BBC, it is as simple as that. You pay more for a lower quality product. (I appreciate this is because people are forced to pay for the BBC).

If you are intetrested in the whole range of sports carried on Sky Sports, then you are obviously happy to pay what they ask to see those sport. Ergo, you are NOT a mug.

However, if you pay out the £200 to £400 plus just to watch F1 next season, than you WOULD be a mug.

And Sky has adverts - so the programmes are already paid for by this!
