Personally, I think they're living on past glories. Back in the 80's, the Mk2 Golf was a good step up in quality, compared to the likes of the Mk3/4 Escort. (I had a Mk4 RS Turbo, and as great as it was, quality wasn't it's strong point). These days, other manufacturers have upped their game and VW's are not the pinnacle of quality/ reliability, they once were. IMO. smile

Well, I’ve never had a Golf before but we bought a very basic Mk6, which long-standing Golf fans seem to think is poor compared to previous models, last March for a family member. We did look at Focus, Astra, i30 and C’eed and I was pretty surprised by how much better the Golf was. Especially compared to the Hyundai and Kia – they just seemed crap in comparison.

Difficult to put a finger on it, but it’s the quiet, compliant ride which I think is the big difference and gives the car a ‘quality’ feel.

biggrin
It's actually a mk3 fiesta. Here are pictures shamefully taken from a previous topic about this advert.

Here is the topic from back in 2009.

Actually surprises me that the advert has been around this long.

I say that every time I see the ad. G/F points out that defeats the object!

Nearly all the rental companies advertise the mid sized hatchbacks they offer as "Golf or similar" but in my experience are almost never an actual Golf.

That said, Avis went through a period last year where they substituted the advertised Golf for Alfa Guiliettas which were in fact a lot nicer than a Golf! biggrin

It's just marketing.

Much like BMW and the "ultimate" driving machine biggrin

Why people get themselves in such a state about it, I don't know - and they'll "say" they're not in a state over it and are just "saying" but we all know the truth biggrin

It didn't read like he had a chip on his shoulder?
Really? I did.

You can feel the envy bubbling up inside him as you read it. He wants a Golf but he can't afford one. smile
Bought a new Golf last in 1995, mk3 1.8 GL with ABS, twin airbags and a glass sunroof as options, all standard now apart from the crap sunroof which ended up embedded in my sister in laws head when she bought it off us and turned it over. Worthy car but deadly dull, I had a MK1 1.9 TSR at the time and avoided the new one at every opportunity. Dont mind them as a car but no particular desire for another one, that ad sums up why really, I could take the co car option at work, or buy one, or lease one, but to be honest for 14 miles three days a week its a bit of a waste, plus, really, its not very PH is it, unless its a MK1 or 2, or at a push an R but they aren't on our list as they are not blessed with an oil burning engine.

You will have to trust me on this, it isn't an envy thing, the ad just so transparent and cynical, the whole "Like a Golf" thing isn't a bad idea per se and people do say it, but its just he way it is done, it should be subtle but it is just not anywhere near.

I sometimes say this to people in various situations(not car related) if I can't be assed,

usually get a confused look,

'A bit like a golf' !!
