I despise this film - I question just how many sharks are killed because of people scared by this film. 5 people die a year worldwide from Shark Attacks. More people die from drowning in their own bath in the UK per year FFS.
Sharks were hunted and killed well before the first airing of Jaws. If anything the film may well have drawn attention to the slaughter they've endured over the years and helped in changing people's attitudes towards them. Jasandjules said:

Global Shark population is reckoned to be around 1 Billion.Annual Global Human Deaths from Sharks : 9
Annual Global Shark Deaths from Humans : 100 million

It is probably due a re-imagining
Yep - who is betting it has more 'action', more teens and more gore.Considering the subject matter (shark attack) - the original actually has quite a low body count. Five people die in total - and arguably only 4 of those as a direct result of the shark killing them (the "eye guy" on the submerged boat probably drown given he was inside the hull of the boat - the eye injury probably sustained as the boat went down).
It also has a relatively old cast (Shaw was 48, Scheider was 43, Gary was 38 and Drayfus the youngest at 28) which IMO makes it more believable (similar story with Alien). It seems most horror films these days have to have a cookie cutter, eye candy cast barely out of high school - and so it will probably be if they ever remake Jaws.

I'd question that too. I suspect the answer is "not many".The vast majority of sharks are (and always have been) killed for food:
