Ach, the bloody Matrix! Doh! banghead

Starship Troopers - oh, yes, now we're cooking.

Close Encounters? Hmmm...watched it again recently and I'd forgotten how much charm it had; what with it hailing froim that more innocent epoch of mid-late 70s blockbusters [Jaws, Superman, Star wars et al.]

Some of the old ones had good storylines but the films themselves can pale compared to modern stuff. Metropolis, however, is a clear exception, for the cinematography and originality alone.

So, first some of the eliminations:-
Stars- Trek and -Wars deserve no place in this list, sorry to all the fans. Star Wars 1 and 2 (sorry, Episodes 4 and 5) were probably the best, and are good films.
Terminators were decent but still hollywood-schlock.
If THX-1138 was that odd film with the spaceborne greenhouse and the little robots, have you SEEN the acting in that?!?
Battlestar Galactica (v2) is good but nothing exceptional.

So...my 2p?
Blade Runner is one of the best movies of all time, sci-fi or not.
The Matrix (original) is one of the best action-films of all time, and created new techniques.
Alien and Aliens are well worth a place on the list
- I don't subscribe to the "Alien is best" viewpoint.
Metropolis (as above)
Ghost in the Shell also deserves a mention, because it raised the bar for all other Anime.
2001: A Space Odyssey for the impact it had on everything sci-fi.

2001 without a doubt. It was landmark film in its day and set a standard for special effects that wasn't matched for a decade. It's still technically more realistic when it comes to a portrait of real spaceflight than any science fiction film ever.

No that was silent running.
THX-1138 was the one with bald chick porn in it. (I was about 12 when I watched it, thats all I remember)

But that was part of it's weakness (besides being unremittingly dull) - insufficient fiction! wink

I'd heard there were some good Russian sci-fi movies (Solaris being one)

Soviet era writers could use the genre as an allegory to their own society.

Anyone seen any?

Had it's moments - disliked the cutesy robots. Ending was interesting - heaven and hell imagery?

A few others should get an honourable mention;

Shape of things to come.
When worlds collide.
Quatermass and the pit.
Invasion of the bodysnatchers.
Soylent Green.

Edited to add;

What about A Matter of Life and Death? It was pretty Sci-Fi like.

Anybody familiar with 'The Chronicles of Riddick' ? Good fun and some nice dialogue eg :

'You did 3 things wrong:
1. You took the job
2. You came light. A crew of 4 for me ? - f*cking insulting' etc etc

hehe
