I like the Blade Runner version with the voice over but people sayt "OH NO you must see the directors cut it is soooooooo much better". Saw it still prefer the version with the voiceover.

a history of violence

definitely a film of two halves. starts off well with good direction, plot, suspense etc. all is good until the killing of ed harris' character where it goes downhill and just gets sillier. another film where the involvement of the director [cronenbourg] seems to make people rave about it.

I own blade runner but havent been able to watch it without falling asleep - and I'm a huge sci-fi fan. Blade runner just doesnt do it for me frown

People rave about Dune - but I havent been able to keep awake through it. I swear I put it on one morning, fell asleep on the sofa and woke up when it was dark and it was STILL only about half way though! That film must be about 8 hours long.

The Deer Hunter.

I've heard there's a good bit with russian roulette in it somewhere but have never managed to sit all the way through the cruddery before that happens.

Bullit.

The best bit was in the Ford Puma advert, all the rest was rubbish.

More votes for:
Forrest Gump
Blair Witch Project
Lock Stock
Sexy Beast

Nominations (hope I didn't overlook these)
City of Angels, just because the writer killed her in the end.. what a dcensoredk! (the Nick Cage movie, not The Crow)
Groundhog Day. Too repetitive. (I liked the idea but found the movie boring. Just kidding about the repetitive bit).
Scream, in fact most Wes Craven horror movies I have seen. Too predictable, and Scream, in my opinion, didn't redeem itself by trying to make a virtue out of its predictability
The Transporter. I've seen more believable action in cartoons. Not sure that this counts as a popular film though.

Do TV shows count? If so, please add Little Britain, Friends, Seinfeld and Spitting Image to the list. Oh, and Lost. And Battlestar Galactica.

And its STILL missing huge chunks of the plot from the book, relies heavily on narration to fill in the gaps and take huge liberties with pretty much all of the religion/mythology from the book too.

And what on earth is with that sound track? jeebus.

That's tragic - I posted earlier about films based on well-loved books facing the choice of either cutting too much material for pacing reasons and being slated by fans, or of leaving too much in and being slated as boring by casual film-goers. Managing to do both at the same time is worse still!

Yup, it does both with great skill! from memory whole chapters of the book are dedicated to intricate descriptions of the background-story, houses, spice, religions, navigators and other stuff i'd imagine it was a fairly tall order to film without tons of plodding dialogue.

Planet of the Apes.

The original with Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall. Everyone hates it for being a bit st. I love it for that.

The Descent.

I think it's great. Low budget Brit movie with NO Hollywood SFX. Cheesy 'let's go die in a cave because we forgot the map'. Great.

1st two star wars films, quite good when I was a kid but everything made after the Empire strikes back is total ste and I can't see why fanboys go crazy over it.

Harry Potter - Both the books and the Films, JK Rowling whilst extremely successful is a very average writer in my humble opinion. The last 3 books were complete ste the last one especially, I honestly can't see what the hub bub is?

Slum Dog millionaire - I thought it was just about okay, no idea why it rained awards on it.

Twilight - Wife dragged me out to see this, definitely a teenage chick flick.

Sex and the City movie - Again blaming the wife for this one, never watched the series and never understood why lots of women worship this ste.
