It was obviously left deliberately ambiguous but I would question the use of the shot of Alex returning home (after a conversation where the nurse explicitly lays down the fact that there is no cure for AIDS) and looking meaningfully at his dad's briefcase.
Plus he has form for being daft with a pistol. Plus he's an emotional basket-case.
But the I agree Herr General had a difficult day as well but on balance, I think I'd probably rather a st day at the office than AIDS.
Maybe they put their heads together for a twofer?
Impossible to say really, unless they get a second series.

For all in all it's silliness two things jump out for me...
The young lead is very good, a compelling talent.
The wardrobe and set design was spot on.
Jonathon Foreigner also appears to like his 80s classic cars.....tidy example of an unmolested Mk2 Granny Estate last night. The young lead is very good, a compelling talent.

And the Iltis Owners Club has had a starring role throughout. Not a G-wagen in sight!

But looking at the wider picture he already has a very strained relationship with Alex, and after his antics joining the peace protesters at the gate Edel will almost certainly have to sling him in the slammer.Plus he has form for being daft with a pistol. Plus he's an emotional basket-case.

His Aide-de-Camp has turned out to be a spy and he didn't spot it
His daughter may or may not have been having a relationship with the spy (he knows they were kissing) and she's now off to Berlin
And to cap it all his wife has left him

Personally, no amount of st day would be worse than getting AIDS but appreciate the General's mileage may vary.
As an aside, from a film-school perspective, the shot of Alex in the hall establishes him as being inside. The next shot being an exterior looking at the house suggests that we are outside hearing something happening inside, which would point to Alex, were it not for the fact that we had already had a shot of the general inside, staring out the window. I thought the camera was actually going to move back until we saw his heels swinging from a tree as Alex shot himself inside, making it a tragic end for the Edel men all round.
The fact that they established them both indoors and moved to the exterior for the gunshot suggests as attempt to be deliberately ambiguous so there is no right answer, I think.
Alex was shot by his father for being an annoying emo tt. Maybe. The ambiguity in that bit leaves a lot of murder/suicide possibilities.
Felt a bit like they had tied the plot in knots so just forgot most of it to jump to the end. So jumped pretty much straight from the brink of nuclear conflict to everything being fine via a quick montage. And it looked like being a lying intelligence agent stoking the whole thing along had no consequences?
Plus where did the whole thing of Ms Rauch going off to Africa come from. Assume there was some historical background to it but to me it seemed a bit abruptly introduced.
Music was Ok though. The incidental music in the last episode or two felt very Depeche Mode synth to me for some reason?
