Brokeback Mountain.

You simply cannot say it was a good film in polite company. But it was just that.

Oh dear, have I caught the bad ghey?

I've just thought of another one - "This Is Spınal Tap". In the 5.1 surround version, you could clearly hear the "whoosh" as this film went straight over my head.

"Our amps go up to 11!" yeah, and?

If you want a proper spoof "rockumentary", watch "Bad News Tour" by the Comedy Strip.

Apocalypse Now. After hearing people rave about it for 20 odd years before I actually saw it, I was only ever going to be disappointed. Which I was. Very.

Nominations (hope I didn't overlook these)
City of Angels, just because the writer killed her in the end.. what a dcensoredk! (the Nick Cage movie, not The Crow)
Funniest ending ever! Toastgirl was blubbing into a cushion and I was crying with laughter. hehe
Sadist! laugh

I dunno if my reaction was a bit strong, but I felt a bit like the writer had spent two hours selling me a lovely balloon, then popped it at the end. The bcensoredd.

I'd have to nominate a lot of Kubrick films, especially the last one, "Eyes wide st".

Every Star Wars movie - everyone seems to like them, but I find them boring and visually naff.

Every Indiana Jones movie - see above.

Every Rocky movie - see above.

Every Jaws movie - see above. This is actually cheating a little, as I've not seen them all. And I don't intend to. Ever.

Every Lord of the Rings movie - they're decent enough visually, but they take far, far too long to get to the point. I've seen each of them just the once, at the cinema.

Ronin - I just find it boring. The cinematography does nothing for me, and the much-praised car chase is badly shot and boring. I watched it when it first came out and thought it to be a bad film. I've since bought the DVD and watched it again, hoping that I would view it with more maturity and a greater appreciation of all things good, and I still found it to be crap.

E.T. - I couldn't even sit all the way through it as a kid, let alone as an adult. It's crap.

Schindler's List - Whilst I can see the point in the film, and find the storytelling to be ok, the whole concept fails to work for me. I don't get emotionally charged by this movie at all, and I can't identify with the characters enough to feel for any of them.

The first Terminator movie - I just find it to be a bit tacky.

Platoon - everyone I know loves this film, and yet I find it to be dreadfully boring and lacking in quality. The cinematography is decent enough, but it's not for me.

Those are just off the top of my head...

...having said all that, one of my favourite films is Vanilla Sky, so I am a bit odd anyway.

Clockwork Orange -- saw it finally - - boring and pretentious

The Deer Hunter -- there's a great 1.5 hour movie in there somewhere- the build-up is far too long

Vanilla Sky? Holy crap, your opinion ie hereby disregarded for making no sense!

wink

Seriously though, half of the films above cant really be described as crap as they do entertain, just maybe not your cup of tea of a subject.

Do you watch Porno's and think 'hmm, not bad but the lightings all wrong, the story is a bit silly and really, who's wife does THAT?' ?

massively overhyped film, it would be nowhere near 'cult' if it hadn't been banned. watched it in the cinema on the re-release circa 99-00 and thought it was crap. the book is worth a read though.

I'll kick off with Blade Runner and Pulp Fiction, which may actually be great films but did feck all for me.
yesclapbounce and all this time I thought it was just me! beer
I would also like to add MASH
Pulp Fiction I think is great, but Blade Runner - absolutely, what is all the fuss about? All those different versions! The film has been put on a pedastal as some kind of Holy Grail of movie making. Very pretty, but I've no desire to watch it again anytime soon.

Same goes for Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket - few memorable lines, but sod all else.

E.T. - Oh God, does it drag on...

Pirates of the Carribean - ok, I haven't seen the last one, but that's probably not a bad thing.

I think I'd rather watch the Star Wars Holiday Special again.

HOWEVER - I thought this thread was about films you like, but didn't want to admit to.

Sooooo, go see The Secretary and American Psycho - great family entertainment there!

Shawshank Redemption . . . . . . only kidding!

Ditto Harry Potter

We had a student working for us last year who queued up half the night to be one of the 1st to buy the latest book and then had a race with ther housemate to se who could finish it 1st. FFS! She bought it on sat and had finished it on sun afternoon!

She was obsessed but sadly not fit!
I really don't get the queueing thing. If it's for something valuable, then fair enough - there's a decent reason. But WTF!

ANYONE who queues for a movie (or a book) has to be, in technical terms, a "Category One Pathetic Prat". The ones who camped FOR A MONTH to see Phantom Mennace - one of the worst movies ever - really are a bunch of losers. Same goes for anyone who queued at all!

Then they make another one, and they are there queing again!!!

Last think I queued for was a book with naked pictures of Madonna in. Probably worthless now, but at the time first editions were worth £100 (on a purchase price of £30 I think).

No mate, read the title of the thread - it's about films everyone else raves about but that leave you cold.

stick it on, i'll be round in 5! biggrin

ps - thread is about films that people look at you as though you were a leper if you disagree that they are 'cult' or 'legend' status. i.e. someone saying shawshank is rubbish.

agree with blade runner, but FMJ is a great film all the way through. apocolypse now is a bit tiresome and the redux version should win the 'cinema arse-numbing' award for being so ridiculously long and pointless.

Adult films that Adults MUST find funny

Something About Mary - in fact absolutely anything by the Farrely (?) Brothers. Not funny and it is only "gross" if you grew up in an Amish community.
American Pie - same thing.
Austin Powers - it grates on me.
Meet the Parents/Fockers thing - so ghastly I cannot even remember what it is called. Ben Stiller isn't funny in films.

Children's Films that Adults MUST love

Monsters Inc - fail to see the attraction
Shrek - eek

+1 for:

The Godfather (1,2 & 3)
Apocalypse Now - that was terrible, I kept thinking that the amazing film everyone goes on about will kick in any time soon.

Just about everybody seems to have missed the point of this thread, which I interpreted as films you like but shouldn´t because everybody thinks they´re crap, rather than films you thinks are crap
Anyway, in this category I would include

Showgirls
Dumb and Dumber
Green Mile

I´m sure I can come up with some others.
