Murder your mum, play all 'moment of madness', walk free.
If his mum had been a dog, he would have been prosecuted for not killing her.

Very difficult living, Long term, with dementia.
Horrendous stuff that case.

Is this that murder 24/7 thing that was on iPlayer? Watched ep3 with my missus last night and was shocked when he got 2 years suspended!!!
I suspect there will have been a lot of mitigation by the defence that we weren't aware of in terms of his motivation; the judge in her summing up said "You are someone who acted out of love and desperation. You have been punished enough and you have to live with what you have done."

I agree it is a tragic case; my mum (81) suffers from dementia and it's a horrible illness - my mum was incredibly independent and I know for a fact that when her condition worsens she would (if she could) thank me for ending her suffering. In this case it was the means he used, which is utterly shocking. If he had smothered her with a pillow it probably would never have gone to court.

It was obvious straight away to me, what had happened with the son, and his mother... but, not to the police...

I think the son came across, as very genuine, and honest sort of person, and, on the evidence we had, the sentence was about right.

Although, it was a very odd method to use.

The first episode was a bit pants, but overall, i enjoyed the series.

my Mum had dementia, died a few months ago (90) but in reality disappeared a couple of years ago. Didn't know who I was and had no idea where she was. I felt for that chap and I think the judge got it bang on. Sad thing is the house will not go to him as you cant profit from a crime.

Not sure where you get that from. They even explained in the program that despite it being clear what was going on, they have to follow every bit of information. If anything the more they investigated and collected evidence/statements the "better" it looked for the Son.

He may well still inherit his mother’s estate; he can apply under the Forfeiture Act 1982 for “relief” due to the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death ie. he did it as an act of mercy. There have been other, similar cases where such an application has succeeded.

My father had dementia, and I was grateful in the end that cancer mercifully shortened his life. My wife has instructions that if I go like that she has to finish me off if she can, and if not then put me in a home and walk away and live her life.

Shane seemed a bit hyper. Could be that his carer forgot to leave him his "medication".

Anyhow, remind me again, who is the victim is in this investigation?

Perhaps DNT means Do Not Touch.

I'm not really having much sympathy for the victims (elderly parent excluded) how much police manpower and cost is used up on these investigations?

Shouldn't have tried for a murder charge. Was never going to stick.

Police and especially the CPS are their own worst enemies sometimes.

They could've made the right charges stick but got greedy and royally fked it up. 6 months work for fk all.

I've been a beneficiary of such poor judgement by Essex police and the CPS. This is not an unusual occurrence.

Surprised they let their incompetence be broadcast.

Agree, should have given him the option to plead to a lesser offence as it was likely that he was being robbed.

What a waste of hundreds of hours of manpower and millions of pounds.

I was gobsmacked when they went for a murder charge. If I’d been on the jury I would have found him NG too.
