Dambusters film
Discussion
The film has a national cinema release on the 17th May 2018, the 75th anniversary of the operation.
The promotion material says - "Experience the film like never before with a brand new 4K restoration, complete with a live satellite broadcast straight from the Royal Albert Hall. TV historian Dan Snow will host the commemorative screening, paying tribute to Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his comrades of the legendary 617 squadron, with music from the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. Special guests will also include family members of the Dam Busters crew and former members of the squadron, as well as historian Paul Beaver and Professor Hugh Hunt, who will explore the history of the iconic raid and how it led to the making of the classic British film."

Here we go again. One mord time: who cares. The Dog didnt design the bomb and it didnt fly any of the aircraft. I think the only reason the dog is included as it portrays gibson as a singular man...just him and his dog against the world etc.
What was the name of his Wife?? We never see her because she didnt do any of the above either. But the same people who say "its not racist......" etc are the same who dont know, or dont care he had a wife. Or even knew....

From what I read, Gibson specifically asked for the dog to be buried at the same time he was scheduled to attack the dam, possibly implying he expected to be in a hole in the ground at the same time. Also the dog's name was the codeword for a successful bomb run, so it was obviously important to Gibson. What was the name of his Wife?? We never see her because she didnt do any of the above either. Obviously a remake could be done without mentioning the dog at all, probably a wise move. But it would lose something.

I don't see why they couldn't just miss out the dog entirely, or at least any reference to his name. Then you'd just see a guy on a telephone receiving the codeword without the viewer even needing to know what it was.
Exactly, it's inconsequential. After checking wiki, it seems, "Guy sometimes used to call his dog Nigsy, so I think that's what we will call it. Stephen has been coming up with other names, but this is the one I want."
The problem is that they used the actual dog's name as a code word for when a damn went over - so it gets used in more places than just when Gibson is calling after his dog. It's an integral part of the actual events and needs to be included.
What annoys me is that it seems to be the only thing about the whole amazing mission that anybody ever seems to want to talk about.

Yes, but the actual word isn't necessary to detonate the bombs, it didn't require that particular arrangement of letters for the bombs to explode, using the dog's name for the codeword is a part of history, though even that bit isn't really intrinsic to the story, it's not a documentary. What annoys me is that it seems to be the only thing about the whole amazing mission that anybody ever seems to want to talk about.
I've not watched Dunkirk, or read the thread, but sorts in there were getting bent out of shape over train seats? Or something.
When you think about what gets left out of war films, Battle of the Bulge for example, leaving out the fact that the name of a dog was the codeword isn't that large.

If it is alright for Quentin Tarantino to use the N word quite often in his movies it's surely quite acceptable to use it in the Dambusters.......it's surely ok to use it for historical purposes.
