Solo: A Star Wars Story

No. I rent blu-rays. My son is a big Star Wars fan so I will probably have to watch it again at some point.
Checking the picture quality is just curiosity on my part. I suspect it was a terrible projector - certainly the worst picture I have ever seen at a cinema.
My local Odeon is a new build so is presumably a decent spec (and nice new clean screens), I’ve certainly not experienced any issues with some films that others have mentioned here as being muddy, dark etc. However, Solo was quite difficult to follow at times, more so in the opening 40 minutes or so. The fight/action sequences seemed to be put together at 5 cuts a second, which with the darkness made it feel a bit like the fight sequences in Transformers, i.e. pretty much unwatchable.Checking the picture quality is just curiosity on my part. I’m intrigued at how the 3D version plays out as this film appears to make zero concessions for the limitations of 3D.

I do wonder whether the prevalence of fast action sequence/cut scenes is one of the reasons 3D never really took off.3D works far better with long, wide, sweeping shots like movies in the 1970s and 1980s had - rather than rapid fast action 'Michael Bay-esq' cuts.
Movies like Jaws, ET, 2001 or even the original Star Wars would have worked really well in 3D.
Film makers seem to think that they can just make a normal movie for 2D, convert it to 3D and it will just work, but as you rightly point out, the considerations are very different.

All these multiple release franchises just smack of dumbing down of film.
Still, if people want to pay in droves to see Avengers part 14, or Salacious Crumb - The Early Years, then who am I to argue?
That post is a ‘dumbing down’ of an argument. No evidence to support your premise and a bit of sarcasm thrown in to round it off. Still, if people want to pay in droves to see Avengers part 14, or Salacious Crumb - The Early Years, then who am I to argue?

FFS, seriously...?
It's so much easier for film companies to churn out another Thor movie every other year than create an authentically new science fiction adventure.
This is obvious dumbing down.
If you disagree then quite frankly, you're wrong.
Met a fellow nerd today not seen for a while, he liked Last Jedi, so obviously we chatted, about INfiity War (concept of which is original) and SOlo, he liked SOlo...in that it was ok, not great, not awful. I quizzed him over what I would have as my biggest niggle (not seen it, watched reviews), the attitude of SOlo at the end, he's not the cocky prick that he is when we first meet him, which sort of doesn't make sense. But he enjoyed it and is happy to watch the next SW film. He said Solo isn't the mess one expected from all the production turmoil
then we both geeked out over stuff in IW

Not surprising Solo is not doing particularly well.
They can blame what ever they like but the reaction to TLJ is accounts for it big time IMO.
Nothing planned to launch now until next December. Hopefully Solo can undo some of the damage by word of mouth in that time.
SW is such a great universe it would be a shame to see it killed off.
Agreed, speaking from personal experience, I pre-booked tickets for TFA, couldn't wait, same goes for Rouge One which I loved, TLJ was so bad I wondered if I was in a bad mood or something, I've tried to re-watch it at home, but 20 mins was enough to prove to me it's just crap. They can blame what ever they like but the reaction to TLJ is accounts for it big time IMO.

I haven't booked tickets for Solo yet, I suspect, 'life will get in the way' and I'll end up missing it at the Cinema, which might not be the end of the world, they seem to be released on iTunes within a few weeks of the cinema these days. (overlapping some times). Even though everyone I've spoken to has said it was 'okay' to 'great'.
I watched episode 7, whatever it was called, and as soon a I realised that it featured a black stormtrooper and a female hero (heroine) I knew the franchise had come to an end. (thought 1-3 were garbage too).
To my mind, Stormtroopers are white nazis and if you're going to be a girl in Star Wars you'd better be a princess.

To address your points, carefully and spoiler free: yes, solo isn't yet the jaded world weary cynic we meet in the cantina, however, he progressed along that arc during the film, including one key detail which will have the hardcore going yes!
I'm certain the character you're familiar with will emerge (alden is booked for a further 3 iirc), in fett, likely a kira and a lando movie. He should not be in kenobi, as that is too contradictory. The arc also echoes (in mirror) Jacen Solo's fall in the novels, I havem't read them, in speaking to someone who has they said it developed over several. Unlike Anakins "i'll never be bad", "c'mon be bad", "never", "you sure?" "OK go on then"
What also is apparent in Solo, is why that world weary cynic did go back and help luke/the rebellion.
The more I think about solo the more I like it, it's set up so much.
Disney cash in? Well, yes, as long as it is along the lines of Rogue One and Solo, that's absolutely fine by me

How is doing yet another Disney Star Wars spin-off or Avengers flick original film making?
These mega blockbusters make up about 1% of the films released into UK cinemas. I'm well away from a decent sized city so 80% of the non-wide release stuff doesn't make it out to me, but even so a huge percentage of the films I've seen in the cinema this year have been non-sequel, non-franchise stuff. If I had easy access to something like the Watershed in Bristol or lived in London I could easily watch two films per week in the cinema and never go near a franchise, sequel, or big budget movie.
Between that and Netflix (home to several risky if not entirely successful 'original' sci-fi movies this year) we're hardly devoid of original content. In fact it's probably better than it's ever been in that respect.

I went to see Solo today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As mentioned in this thread already was that I did find the picture quality to be a bit dull, especially when you compare to the sharp contrasts in the last couple of Star Wars movies.
I can't say I've given any of this gender, sexuality stuff a second thought. I just enjoy the movies as they come as I did the originals when I got to see them and enjoy seeing where they're taking the Star Wars universe.
I'm not surprised this is the least profitable of the newer movies, purely as for many non Star Wars fans they're not fussed about seeing one specific characters back story, secondly it's very close to the last movie so many average watchers will shrug it off. As a fan though, I'm very much looking forward to the Bobba Fette and Obi Wan stories.
Plus, the cameo at the end of Solo was a great surprise.

I've not come across that channel before, excellent. Lots of spoilers in the review just in case anyone wants to see the movie first, but to be honest that review is probably all you will ever need.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOanp1EZZQc
