Bohemian Rhapsody

I can see why this has split critics and audience. It's certainly a crowd pleaser and the last 30 minutes really does elevate the film to another level, but the actual character stories are clunky as hell and at times painfully on the nose. The token nods towards his race, sexuality and illness are cringeworthy at times. It doesn't get close to A Star is Born in that respect.

For me, a not particularly good film but a spectacular recreation of some key moments which more than justify a cinema ticket (so glad I saw it with a big sound system). I will go again even though I thought the first hour or so was really quite poor at times.

Three Billboards etc. Talk about emperor’s new clothes, both for the film and lead actress. Zero Billboards out of three Missouris.

This week I have been mostly watching...

'Hanover Street'

...and now that I have, I shall never waste an hour and forty-nine minutes of my life watching it again.

Utter dirge, and a proper stinker!

As a love story, it had no redeeming features. Then, when Ford and Plummer ended up in occupied France together? Then it tried to be a war film for a bit, and failed miserably. Props master, costume designer, and make-up all needed tying to a post and being summarily executed by the Gestapo for crimes against cinema. Eddie Kidd even got a credit for the motorcycle jump over an inexplicable anti-tank ditch on a rural French farm.

Sadly, it had the means to be so much more. Especially with half-a-dozen B-25 bombers at their disposal. A wasted opportunity, and a waste of my time watching it. And I say that as someone who has watched plenty of dire old movies, but seldom finds that they were a complete waste of time...

Bohemian Rhapsody 9.9/10

Loved it. I'm not the biggest Queen fan but I do like them. I thought it was a good story with great acting, I learnt a lot about the band and people.

At one point I needed to shuffle in my seat but the cinema was so quiet I couldn't, I don't think I've ever seen an entire audience so fixated. I'm not the biggest fan of the actor the played Freddie but I almost forgot it was him a few times.

The 9.9 was only because it needed another hour. It feels like they missed a lot out.

No pressure on Taron Egerton when he plays Elton John! He did Eddie the Eagle pretty well so we'll see.

The Night Comes For Us - batst crazy Korean flick with a decent amount of ultraviolence. If you liked The Raid, tuck in.

A Star Is Born - a definite film of 2 halves. Really quite enjoyed the music of the first half... this was, regrettably, nullified by the st story and lurch into st pop. Still Sam Elliot is suited grizzled (as always). Bo-Rap was immeasurably better

The Master

sky blurb sounded interesting, joaquin as a drunk being mates with a cult leader, PSH. Was expecting a Koresh type, but recognised who it was based on as soon as I saw Hoffman. It was o, some lovely shots, but pretty boring, I stuck with it, but didn't enjoy a good chunk, won't be watching it again.

That scene with PSH “auditing” Joaquin was an absolute acting masterclass. Agree with you a bit about the movie as a whole, but there were some fine performances in it.

Tried, I Tonya last night.

Switched it off after about 20 minutes as I thought it was just annoying. Went and watched the display panel on my new fridge freezer, far more fulfilling!

A few of us including yourself have been going on about this film on the Netflix thread. Ultraviolence is the word alright, but there is enough comedy relief/twinkle in the eyes to get you through the blood, and believe me, there is So. Much. Blood.

It is essentially a series of set pieces that sequentially try and outdo the previous one for absurdity and wonderfully creative ways of maiming and killing people. It is genuinely full of WTF moments, loosely based around 'a plot'.

I've made it sound like a horror/gore fest. It's not, I'm really not into those sorts of films (SAW etc), but you can't help but admire the choreography and inventiveness.

Not a date night movie, but what a great action film. It's basically Raid 3 and that can only be a good thing.

what an absolute brilliant film. the sky blurb doesn't do it justice. I taped it because I'd seen it on rlm, and the one who's least fat really liked it. So I gave it a whizz, and glad I did, turned out to be a top film, and I was dubious because that one of rlm likes some crappy films.
but this was absolutely top, and at one point, when the super soldier was attacked by other super soldiers it made me chuckle, this was basically what captain america would have been if they hadn't found steve rogers. biggrin

Watched this without really knowing much about the back story other than vaguely remembering the events, really enjoyed it.

Others:
Sicario, day of the soldado - much better than the first one, very watchable
Skyscraper - only watched it cos the kids like the Rock, spent more time on my laptop than watching the film
Christopher Robin - really enjoyed this, bit of an old school feel similar to Swallows and Amazons
Antman and the Wasp - bit meh, but I like the way they used the ending to set up the next Avengers
The Spy who Dumped me - sort of ok with a glass of wine not expecting much sort of vibe, if I'd gone to the cinema to see it I'd be unhappy

I thought it was fantastic myself and is probably one of my top 10 films. Particularly liked the ending where you ask yourself if that guy really was the killer after all. We shall never know...

I watched this recently too (all of it biggrin).

I thought it was OK. It's one of those films you can tell isn't too sure of itself because it regularly calls on its soundtrack to keep you engaged like a cheap documentary. It's way too long, and I think would have been better with if it was all tightened up.

I cannot comprehend how anyone thinks this film is anything other than epic.

I do think that you do make an important point there - I too should qualify my statement by stating that I don't 'do' horror films (or indeed the 'torture porn' that are classified as horror either)
